WICHITA FALLS, Texas (April 18, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team finished up its stretch of eight-straight road games with a pair of losses at Midwestern State University on Friday. In the end, the Falcons lost 13-4 in five innings in game one before giving up a 5-0 first-inning lead and falling 8-5 in game two.
Â
Game 1 (UTPB 4, MSU 13):
- A leadoff walk by Keri Sanford and a two-out RBI-single to left field by Kelsey Valo allowed UTPB to score first in the top of the first inning, but MSU had nine runs on nine hits through three innings and would score at least two runs in each of the first four innings to get to the run-rule.
- MSU's two runs in the first inning came via a pair of back-to-back two-out RBI-singles to center field, and then two UTPB errors and a three-run triple that saw the batter also score on an error led to a five-run bottom of the second inning.
- A leadoff home run down the left field line by Madison Stewart and another error by the Falcons, this time on a stolen base attempt, allowed two more Mustang runs to score in the bottom of the third, but UTPB tried to get back into it in the top of the fourth with a two-run triple to right center field by Sanford and an RBI-single up the middle by Emery Aguilar on back-to-back at bats.
- That made the score 9-4 after three and a half innings, but MSU got to the run-rule in the bottom of the fourth inning as the fourth Falcon error led things off before a double and a walk to load the bases with nobody out. From there, an RBI-walk, a sacrifice fly on a foul out to right field, and a two-run single up the middle would round out of the scoring for the game.
- UTPB was led offensively by Sanford, who went 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBI's.
- Sandford, Valo and Carlee Quintero each recorded a hit and walk for the Falcons while Lauren Lopez had a single and was hit by a pitch.
- MSU went 6-for-13 (.462) with runners in scoring position and drew 10 walks from UTPB pitching.

Game 2 (UTPB 5, MSU 8):
- After hitting a home run in the first inning of game one at No. 1 West Texas A&M University on Wednesday, Taylor Ramirez started things off in the first inning of game two on Friday with a grand slam home run to left center field. The big inning for UTPB started with back-to-back walks by Sanford and Aguilar and a bunt single by Quintero, and then after Ramirez cleared the bases, the inning continued with a single to left center field by Samantha Rodriguez and a single to left field by Mia Serrato to put two runners on base with two outs. UTPB's fifth hit of the opening inning was an RBI-single through the right side by Kaylee Moses, scoring Rodriguez to make it a 5-0 start for the Falcons.
- MSU cut it to 5-4 with a three-run bottom of the third inning featuring a pair of walks to lead off the inning, followed by a sacrifice fly to right field, a run on a wild pitch, and another run on a two-out ground-rule double to left center field.
- A leadoff home run to left center field by Stewart tied the game at 5-5 to start off the bottom of the fourth inning, and then two batters later, Camile Nunez sent a solo shot to center field to give the Mustangs the lead (6-5).
- For the second inning in a row, MSU led off with home run, this one going to right center field off the bat of Sydney Linn to make it 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
- UTPB gave up five home runs in game two and seven between both games at No. 1 West Texas A&M on Wednesday, and was bitten by the long ball again in game two on Friday at MSU. In addition to hitting the first of three home runs in game two for the Mustangs, Stewart had two leadoff home runs against the Falcons during the day.
- In all, MSU scored at least two runs in three straight innings starting in the third and totaled seven runs during that stretch to overcome the early deficit and earn the win.
- UTPB was led offensively by Ramirez, who went 1-for-2 with a grand slam in the first inning.
- Quintero was the lone Falcon with two hits in a game on the day, going 2-for-4 in game two.
- Sanford had both one hit and a walk for the second game in a row.
- Meghan Gattis led the Falcons' pitching staff, throwing 2.2 innings of two-run ball.
- After the Falcons exploded for five runs on five hits in the first inning, Addison Lindemann (8-15) came in to pitch to start off the second inning and proceeded to limit UTPB to just two hits, no runs, one walk and six strikeouts over the final six innings of the game. Lindemann previously worked seven innings and held UTPB to three hits in a 1-0 victory in Odessa, Texas, on March 13.

Team Records:
- UTPB falls to 8-42 overall and 3-37 in the Lone Star Conference, and finishes the year 0-22 on the road in conference play while MSU improves to 19-30 and 16-24. It was the first time in the last four seasons the Falcons were unable to earn at least one win over the Mustangs during the season.
