Falcons open final weekend of the season vs. ENMU

ODESSA, Texas (April 25, 2025) – Meghan Gattis and Emery Aguilar combined to shut out the Greyhounds for eight straight innings between the end of game one and the beginning of game two of their doubleheader, but it would not be enough as The University of Texas Permian Basin offense was held scoreless in both games against Eastern New Mexico University for the second time this season. In the end, the Falcons fell by similar scores of 5-0 and 6-0 on Friday at the UTPB Softball Park after falling 4-0 and 6-0 in Portales, New Mexico, earlier this season.

Game 1 (UTPB 0, ENMU 5):
  • Laila Vasquez (0-4) allowed five runs on two hits (pair of two-RBI doubles) and recorded one out in the first inning before being replaced by Gattis, who righted the ship by limiting the Greyhounds to five hits and zero runs over the final 6.2 innings.
  • Conversely, Miranda Guillen (14-5) allowed five hits, no runs and no walks through all seven innings. She did, however, issue back-to-back hit by pitches against Samantha Rodriguez and Mia Serrato in the fifth inning.
  • Guillen worked three 1-2-3 innings in the first, third, and fourth innings, while no runner for the Falcons advanced past second base during the game.
  • It was Guillen's four complete-game shutout of the season and was her second complete-game shutout against the Falcons this year after surrendering three hits, no runs and one walk while striking out 13 batters in a 4-0 game-one win back on March 23.
  • In addition to the two hit batters in the fifth inning, the UTPB offense got two runners on base with a one-out single to left center field by Taylor Ramirez and a two-out single to third base by Carlee Quintero in the second inning, and also got a pair of singles by Angelina Arriaga and Serrato in the seventh inning.
  • The UTPB defense turned two double plays behind Gattis, a 4-6-3 double play on a groundball to second base in the third and an 8-3 double play on a flyout to center field in the fifth.
  • UTPB was outhit 7-5 in game one.

Game 2 (UTPB 0, ENMU 6):
  • Aguilar (2-9) pitched a complete game and allowed eight hits, six total runs, five earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts in seven innings. It was her second complete game of the season.
  • Marissa Rodriguez (6-9) also went the distance for ENMU, earning the complete-game shutout while allowing six hits, zero runs, two walks and four strikeouts. It was her second complete game of the season as well, and was her first complete-game shutout.
  • Leadoff hitter Keri Sanford (2-for-3) accounted for two of UTPB's six hits.
  • After a leadoff single through the right side by Sanford followed by a pair of groundouts, UTPB had a chance to take a lead in the bottom of the first inning but stranded Sanford on third base.
  • ENMU pushed across its first run of the game in the third inning as a leadoff single up the middle was followed by a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third, and a sacrifice fly to center field to score the runner.
  • After a leadoff walk by Serrato was followed by a bunt single by Kelsey Valo to put two Falcons on base with nobody out, UTPB would unfortunately leave the tying-run on third base in the bottom of the third, and then saw ENMU push across three runs, including two runs with two outs (RBI-single, wild pitch), in the top of the fourth.
  • A single to shortstop by Aguilar in the bottom of the fourth and a single to left field by Lilly Chavez in the bottom of the fifth made it four Falcons reaching base to lead off an inning within the first five innings of the game.
  • The top of the fifth inning saw a strong catch by Sanford on a line drive at shortstop followed by back-to-back over-the-shoulder catches in right field by Kaylee Moses.
  • A leadoff home run through the wind to center field, the only extra-base hit of the game, and a double error by the Falcons on a stolen base attempt allowed two insurance runs for ENMU to score in the top of the seventh.
  • UTPB was outhit by two (8-6) for the second game in a row.

Team Records:
  • UTPB falls to 8-44 overall and 3-39 in the Lone Star Conference.
  • ENMU snaps a six-game losing streak and improves to 28-24 overall and 21-21 in the LSC. After putting its postseason chances in doubt heading into the final weekend (tied for 7th in the LSC standings), ENMU instead was able to right the ship and secure its spot in the postseason.
  • With two more wins on Friday, Eastern rides a 10-game winning streak against the Falcons, beginning back in 2023 with a three-game sweep in Odessa, Texas. The Greyhounds are now 9-7 when playing in Odessa.

Next Up: UTPB remains in Odessa, Texas, for the final series of the season on Sunday, April 27, with a Senior Day doubleheader against Western New Mexico at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The two UTPB seniors will be recognized in between games.
