Game Recap: Softball |

Softball continues tough weekend at No. 7 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas (April 13, 2025) – Two days after being no-hit in game two and being limited to just four total hits in a pair of shutout losses at Lubbock Christian University, The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team managed five hits while being shut out twice, 7-0 and 8-0 (five innings), at No. 7 nationally-ranked Angelo State University on Sunday.

Game 1 (UTPB 0, ASU 7):
  • It was a three-run bottom of the first inning for the Rambelles coming on just one hit with two walks, a wild pitch and an error.
  • Then back-to-back bunt singles back to the pitcher led off a two-run bottom of the third inning, and a pair of errors and a hit by pitch led to two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • ASU finished with seven runs on five hits and scored three unearned runs on three UTPB errors.
  • The UTPB offense, meanwhile, did not get a baserunner until a two-out single to left field by Kaylee Moses in the top of the third.
  • UTPB's only other baserunner came via a two-out single to shortstop by Keri Sanford in the top of the sixth.
  • No Falcon runners reached second base for the second game in a row.
  • Three ASU pitchers combined for eight strikeouts and zero walks allowed.

Game 2 (UTPB 0, ASU 8):
  • Emery Aguilar (2-6) pitched a scoreless first inning and had two outs with a runner at second base in the bottom of the second inning before a two-out rally that saw three runs score, the first coming on a wild pitch and the next two coming on a pair of two-out RBI-singles.
  • A passed ball helped lead to an unearned run for the Rambelles in the bottom half of the third, and a pair of two-run singles helped ASU get to the eight-run mark in the fourth.
  • In the top of the third inning, a walk by Aguilar and a single through the right side by Mia Serrato put two runners on base in the same inning for the Falcons for the first time since the third inning of game one at LCU on Friday. However, a popout on a sacrifice bunt attempt thwarted the Falcons' chance to try and get on the scoreboard.
  • UTPB again had runners on first and second in the fourth inning after a two-out bunt single to third base by Carlee Quintero and a hit by pitch by Lauren Lopez, but a flyout to center field ended the Falcons' scoring threat for the second inning in a row.
  • Aguilar reached base for the second time in the game with a leadoff single through the left side in the top of the fifth. She would advance all the way to third base after a groundout to second base by Serrato and a sacrifice bunt by Sanford, but a flyout to right field was all she wrote.
  • ASU senior third baseman Averie Gunther, the reigning Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week, was 3-for-3 with three RBI's in game two on Sunday and was a combined 4-for-4 with four RBI's and three runs scored, a sacrifice and a hit by pitch on the day.

Team Records:
  • UTPB falls to 8-38 overall and 3-33 in the Lone Star Conference, and is now 0-18 on the road with 10 shutouts in conference action.
  • ASU improves to 37-9 overall and is now 20 games above .500 in conference play at 28-8.
  • The Rambelles are also now an impressive 22-1 at home this season.
  • Earlier this season, the Belles won game one 10-1 in six innings and game two 4-2 against the Falcons on March 28th in Odessa, Texas. ASU had been swept in its previous two series before playing the Falcons for the first time this season, but then something clicked as ASU has since gone 11-1 over its last 12 games (including Sunday), starting with its sweep over UTPB.
  • The Belles are ranked seventh in the latest version of the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, marking their third consecutive week in the seventh spot.

Next Up: UTPB remains on the road for two more series next week, starting at No. 1 nationally-ranked West Texas A&M University at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16.
