Softball gives up big lead, drops heartbreaking extra-inning loss in game two at Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. (March 9, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team held a 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning of game two at Cameron University on Sunday, but in the end, fell 11-10 in eight innings. The Aggies also won game one 4-1.
 
Game 1 (UTPB 1, CU 4):
  • UTPB was held to three hits and three walks.
  • An error at first base and a hit by pitch to start off the bottom of the first inning led to back-to-back run scoring doubles for Cameron to take a 3-0 lead.
  • A two-out double by Taylor Ramirez scored Keri Sanford for UTPB's lone run of the game in the fourth inning.
  • Cameron got the run back in the bottom half of the fourth with a leadoff double, its third double of the game, followed by a sacrifice and a passed ball to score the run and make it 4-1.
  • In the top of the seventh, Ramirez drew her second leadoff walk of the game and was followed by a pinch-hit single by Kelsey Valo to put runners at the corners and bring the tying run up to bat with nobody out, but three straight strikeouts ended the game.
  • Meghan Gattis pitched four innings allowing six hits, four runs and just one walk and teamed with Emery Aguilar (2.0 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks) to try and give the Falcons' offense a fighting chance.
  • For Cameron, Stormee Reed was dominant in the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out 10 batters.
 
Game 2 (UTPB 10, CU 11):
  • The big hit for UTPB came in the top of the fourth inning when with two outs and the bases loaded, Ramirez hit a three-run double to right center field to give UTPB a 6-1 lead.
  • Starting pitcher Jessica Cantrell followed with back-to-back strikeouts to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning and pitched her second 1-2-3 inning of the game in the fifth.
  • UTPB expanded its lead on RBI-walks by Angelina Arriaga and Michaella Baker in the sixth inning, and added two more runs on a sacrifice fly to left field by Ramirez and an RBI-single through the right side by Valo in the seventh inning.
  • After running into some trouble in the final two innings and being unable to close out the game or get an out in the seventh inning, Cantrell finished with a final line of six innings pitched allowing nine hits, seven runs, four walks and six strikeouts.
  • Down 8-1 to start the bottom of the sixth inning, Cameron hit a one-out solo home run, and then down 10-3 to start the bottom of the seventh, the Aggies hit a lead off home run and scored four runs before the first out was recorded. With one out and the bases loaded in a 10-7 game still in the seventh inning, an error at shortstop allowed two more runs to score, and then a sacrifice fly to right field tied the game.
  • UTPB went down 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth while Cameron started off its half of the final inning with a leadoff single to center field. Then after a fielder's choice, a double to left center field by Mia Garcia scored the winning run all the way from first base.
  • Cameron scored 10 runs on six hits over the final three innings of the game, including seven runs on just two hits in the seventh. The chaotic bottom of the seventh inning saw the Aggies take advantage of four walks, a hit by pitch, two UTPB errors and two wild pitches.
  • The two teams combined for 21 runs, 24 hits, 15 walks and five errors.
  • Sanford finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored from the top spot in the lineup while Ramirez was 3-for-4 with four RBI's and a three-run double.
  • Aguilar and Carlee Quintero both added two hits and two runs scored as well.
  • UTPB drew a season-high eight walks as a team, led by Valo with three and Quintero and Arriaga both with two.
  • It was also UTPB's most runs (10), hits (13) and runs batted in (8) in a conference game this season.
 
Combined Statistical Leaders:
  • Taylor Ramirez was a combined 4-for-5 (.800) with five runs batted in, two doubles and two walks.
  • Keri Sanford was 4-for-7 (.571) with four runs scored.
  • Carlee Quintero was 3-for-6 (.500) with two walks as well.
  • Lastly, Kelsey Valo was 2-for-3 (.667) and drew a team-best three walks.
 
Team Records:
  • UTPB falls to 6-20 overall and 1-15 in the LSC while Cameron improves to 13-9 and 8-8 with its fourth sweep in its last five series. The Aggies have yet to a split a series so far this season.
 
Next Up: UTPB returns home next weekend during Spring Break to host Midwestern State University (Friday, Mar. 14; 1 p.m.) and No. 5 West Texas A&M University (Sunday, Mar. 16; 1 p.m.).
