Falcons come up short in close game two vs. Mustangs

ODESSA, Texas (March 13, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team left 10 runners on base in a 6-1 loss in game one and then was held to just three hits despite having a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the sixth inning of a tough 1-0 defeat in game two against Midwestern State University.

Game 1 (UTPB 1, MSU 6):
  • After a hit by pitch, a sacrifice bunt and four straight singles to score three runs in the top of the first inning for MSU, UTPB had runners at the corners with one out in the bottom half, but came up empty.
  • Taylor Ramirez crashed in hard for a diving catch in center field for the second out of a 1-2-3 top of the second inning that featured three straight flyouts, but UTPB left the bases loaded in the bottom half.
  • A two-out solo home run to left center field made it 4-0 Mustangs in the top of the third inning,
  • After scoring three runs on four straight singles in the first inning, MSU scored two more runs on three straight singles in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
  • UTPB left two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth, making it five runners left in scoring position and seven runners left on base through four innings.
  • Emery Aguilar came on to pitch in the top of the fifth inning and got a 1-2-3 inning, and then she led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to center field. UTPB then had the bases loaded with nobody out, but a 4-6-3 double play for the first two outs helped limit the Falcons to just one run.
  • After scoring UTPB's lone run in the bottom of the fifth, Aguilar followed by tossing another 1-2-3 inning in the sixth.
  • With three scoreless innings under her belt in the circle, Aguilar stepped back up to the plate, battled to a 3-2 count, fouled off multiple two-strike pitches and drew a leadoff walk to start off the bottom of the seventh. However, runners left on base would continue to be the theme of the day for the Falcons as Aguilar was ultimately stranded at third base.
  • UTPB left at least one runner in scoring position in each of the final four innings of the game and left eight runners in scoring position for the game, including stranding five runners at third base. Midwestern State, meanwhile, went 7-for-13 (.538) with runners in scoring position.
  • Keri Sanford (2-4), Carlee Quintero (2-4) and Kaylee Moses (2-3) each recorded two hits in game one.
  • Angelina Arriaga drew a pair of walks while Aguilar finished with one hit and one walk.
  • Kayleigh Bowers (2-4) got the win for the Mustangs. The right-hander pitched a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits with four walks and striking out three. At the plate, the Mustangs were led by Megan Ayala, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI's on a two-run single in the first inning and a solo home run in the third inning.

Game 2 (UTPB 0, MSU 1):
  • A nice throw by Sanford from short and a nice catch on the dig by Moses at first base stranded a runner at third base in the top of the second inning.
  • MSU scored the lone run of the game in the top of the third, getting a leadoff single to right field, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI-double by Camile Nunez just hitting the chalk down the left field line.
  • UTPB's first hit of the game was a one-out single to left field by Kelsey Valo in the bottom of the fourth inning. That led to a pair of two-out walks by Nia Brown and Arriaga, but a groundout to second base left the bags loaded.
  • A line drive double play to Brown at third base, who after the catch threw over to Mia Serrato at second base, brought an end to the top of the sixth inning.
  • UTPB's second hit came on a perfectly placed leadoff bunt single by Quintero in the bottom of the sixth. Valo followed with a single through the right side to put two runners on with nobody out. Then with both the tying run and the go-ahead run in scoring position with one out after a throw out at home plate, a strikeout looking and a popup behind the second base bag ended the Falcons' biggest scoring threat of the game.
  • Still down by just one run heading into the bottom of the seventh, a hard lineout by Moses to right field kept her from what looked like could be extra bases.
  • Jessica Cantrell (4-7) did her best to give her team a chance to earn the win, scattering eight hits and giving up just one run while not walking a single batter en route to earning the sixth complete game of her freshman campaign.
  • Valo was 2-for-3 in game two while Brown and Arriaga both walked twice.
  • Addison Lindemann (4-8) threw a three-hit shutout to lead Midwestern State. Lindemann gave up three hits, walked four and struck out three. She also held UTPB hitless in five at bats with runners in scoring position.

Team Records:
  • UTPB falls to 6-22 overall and 1-17 in the Lone Star Conference. The Falcons have defeated the Mustangs at least once in each of the last three seasons, and will have another chance to do so in mid-April.
  • Midwestern State improves to 8-19 overall and 5-13 in the LSC and puts an end to a six-game losing streak.

Next Up: UT Permian Basin is back in action at home on Saturday, March 15, hosting No. 3 nationally-ranked West Texas A&M University. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. from the UTPB Softball Park.
