Falcons get inside-the-park home run, complete game and walk-off hit to defeat Greyhounds

Haggerty, Johnson and Rigtrup lead at the plate while Nolan LaChappa goes the distance on the mound

ODESSA, Texas (March 8, 2025) – An inside-the-park home run from Carson Johnson, a complete-game victory from Nolan LaChappa and a walk-off double by Brent Rigtrup sent The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team to a 14-4 seven-inning victory over Eastern New Mexico University on a cool Saturday afternoon at Roden Field.

Kaleb Scull gave the ball a ride to deep left field to start off the bottom of first inning, but the Greyhounds were able to make the catch up against the wall.

Fortunately, UTPB (4-19 overall, 4-19 Lone Star Conference) continued to put the bat on the ball as Jack Haggerty followed with a single to right field, and then after a walk by Johnson, Rigtrup brought them both home with a two-RBI double also to right field.

After a caught stealing at second base to end the top of the first inning, a diving stop by Bode Stewart at first base led to the second out of the top of the second inning as LaChappa (1-2) pitched a 1-2-3 frame and faced the minimum through two innings.

The strong defense continued for UTPB as Dayton Osborn made a diving catch in center field for the first out of the third inning, and then a called strike three ended the inning as LaChappa left a two-out double stranded at second base.

UTPB again scored twice in the bottom of the third, getting a hit by pitch by Haggerty before Johnson's inside-the-park home run to center field as the Greyhounds' fielder crashed into the wall.

After four scoreless innings thrown by LaChappa, a leaping catch in left field by Haggerty saved extra bases for the second out of the top of the fifth inning, but it was not enough to prevent a run from scoring after an error on a groundball to first base allowed an unearned run to score.

Scull ranged from his shortstop position and ended the top of the fifth inning with a nice catch in shallow left field, and then he led off the bottom of the fifth with a standup double to left center field.

After Scull moved to third base on a balk, Haggerty brought him in with an RBI-single through the left side, just over the outstretched glove of the shortstop.

Then with the bases loaded and nobody out after three straight singles, Wiki DeLeon drew an RBI-walk.

The onslaught continued as Osborn took advantage of a defensive shift by the Greyhounds and brought two runners in with a single through the left side, and then Jarren Lewis scored two runners with a double to left center field, making it 10-1 Falcons.

Each of the first seven Falcons in the bottom of the fifth reached base, six on a hit. In all, UTPB sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on seven hits as Johnson sent a three-run double down the right field line to round out the scoring in the inning.

Haggerty was 2-for-2 and scored on each of his first four plate appearances while Johnson started 3-for-3 with five runs batted in.

After a leadoff double in the top of the sixth, a nice stop by Johnson on a hard grounder to the hot corner at third base got the first out of the inning, and then back-to-back groundouts to Makai DeSoto at second base stranded a runner on third base and pulled the Falcons to within three outs of ending the game. However, an error at third base and back-to-back run-scoring doubles extended the game for the Greyhounds.

Skull and Johnson both walked in the bottom of the seventh, and with two outs, Rigtrup stepped up to the plate and gave the home fans what they were looking for with a walk-off double to right field, scoring Scull to end the game.

UTPB finished with 14 runs on 14 hits, earning their second win in the last week scoring 14 runs. In addition to being the second-most hits in a game for the Falcons this season, UTPB set a new season-high in doubles (5) and walks (7).

In addition to his 3-for-3 effort at the plate that featured a double and an inside-the-park home run, Johnson walked twice and scored three runs. He would however, finish just a triple shy of the cycle.

UTPB's top three spots in the lineup (Scull, Haggerty, Johnson) accounted for nine of UTPB's 14 runs scored.

In the cleanup spot, Rigtrup finished 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a pair of run-scoring doubles, including the walk-off double.

Osborn, a freshman from Lubbock, Texas, was 2-for-3 with an RBI-single, an RBI-double and a stolen base.

LaChappa threw 117 pitches and finished with seven hits, four total runs, two earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts in seven innings.

"Nolan pitched extremely well today," said UTPB Head Coach Justin Phillips. "He pitched in the zone and challenged them will all of his pitches. Offensively, our lineup took advantage of their mistakes. We have to come ready to play tomorrow with the same intensity in the zone and at the plate."

The fourth and final game of the series between UTPB and ENMU will start at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, from Odessa, Texas.
