EDMOND, Okla. (March 7, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team lost its first two games of its weekend in Oklahoma, falling 12-0 in five innings in game one and 4-0 in game two at No. 19 nationally-ranked Oklahoma Christian University.
Â
Game 1 (UTPB 0, OC 12):
- OC scored 12 runs on 12 hits, scoring the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the first inning after a leadoff walk.
- Keri Sanford led off the game in the top of the first inning with a walk as well, but after stealing second base, was stranded after three straight strikeouts. Only two more Falcons would reach base the rest of the game.
- OC then started the bottom of the second inning with four straight hits and finished off its five-run, six-hit inning with back-to-back RBI-doubles, the first down the left field line and the second a ground-rule double to right field.
- Again in the bottom of the fourth, the first four Eagles reached to start off the inning as a leadoff walk was followed by a hit by pitch and back-to-back RBI-singles. The inning ended with a two-RBI triple that also saw the batter score after a throwing error by the Falcons.
- UTPB's lone hits were a two-out single through the right side by Sanford in the third inning and a leadoff bunt single to third base by Carlee Quintero in the fourth, but neither runner got as far as second base.
- It was the second series in a row the Eagles' pitching staff opened up with a two-hitter in game one.
Â
Game 2 (UTPB 0, OC 4):
- Despite a much closer score in game two, the Falcons were no-hit by the Eagles.
- Jessica Cantrell (4-6) limited the Eagles to just one hit and one walk through a scoreless first three innings, and saw a passed ball score the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- A leadoff triple to right center field and a two-out triple to left center field set up a two-run fifth-inning for the Eagles, and then a leadoff double down the left field line led to the final run of the game in the sixth inning.
- Cantrell pitched all six innings for UTPB, giving up seven hits, four total runs, three earned runs and just one walk.
- Jill Dickson (7-4) issued three walks but struck out 12 batters and earned the complete-game shutout. It was the Eagles' third shutout win in their last four games. In the circle, OC is fourth in the Lone Star Conference with a combined 2.99 earned run average.
- Gabriella Cabrera led off the second inning with a walk, Sanford walked with two outs in the sixth inning, and Kelsey Valo made her season-debut with a pinch-hit walk with two outs in the seventh inning.
- OC pitchers Grace Anderson (8-2) and Dickson combined for 17 strikeouts in 11 innings of work on the day, allowing two hits and zero runs. Marti Yaerger extended her hitting streak to 11 games with back-to-back single-hit outings.
