Morgan Helgesen and
Avalon Munoz of The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball were named to the 2024-25 Academic All-District® Team, selected by College Sports Communicators.
Morgan Helgesen is a small forward who maintains a 4.0 GPA in her counseling Master's program. She also held a 3.91 undergraduate GPA as an education major. A 2023-24 Honorable Mention All-Lone Star Conference selection, Helgesen started in 21 of 29 games this season and averaged 7.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. She ranked second on the team with 159 rebounds and 47 3-pointers while coming in third with 51 assists. She ranked 16th in the LSC in total rebounds and was 17th in rebounds per game. She also ranked ninth in the LSC in 3-pointers per game (1.6) and was top-10 in made 3-pointers. Last season, she scored a career-high 30 points and set the UTPB single-game record for a 3-point field goal percentage by making seven of her eight 3-pointers (87.5 percent) vs. Angelo State University on February 28, 2024. This season, she reached 1,000 career points in UTPB's regular-season finale at Angelo State on February 27, 2025. After scoring 20 points in that contest, she dropped 20 points for the second game in a row, made six of her eight 3-point attempts, and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds against the No. 1 team in NCAA Division II in her final game as a Falcon in this year's LSC Quarterfinals. In the UTPB career record books, Helgesen ranks first in program history in games played (135) and is second in minutes (3,745), second in rebounds (662), fourth in assists (189), fifth in field goals made (356), fifth in 3-pointers made (176), sixth in points (1,032), sixth in steals (153) and ninth in free throws made (144). Helgesen has made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll during each of her first nine semesters at UTPB (Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Fall 2024).
Avalon Munoz is a point guard who holds a 3.56 GPA in her computer science Master's program. She also held a 3.86 undergraduate GPA as a computer science major. Munoz, who was named Third-Team All-Lone Star Conference in 2022-23, was named to the LSC All-Defensive Team this past season. She was one of three Falcons to start in all 29 games this season and averaged 7.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game while leading the Falcons with 114 assists and ranking second with 48 steals and 72 made free throws. Munoz ranked second in the LSC and 40th in the country in individual assist/turnover ratio (+1.75). She also ranked third in the conference in assists per game (3.9) and was fourth in total assists (114). In UTPB's 67-57 home win over Angelo State University in its LSC opener this season on Saturday, November 23, 2024, Munoz became the Falcons' all-time leader in minutes played with 3,275 minutes at the time. Then with 8:15 to go in the second quarter of UTPB's 68-46 home win over Western New Mexico University on Thursday, January 30, 2025, Munoz hit a long two-point jumper to reach the 1,000-career point mark. During the 2022-23 season, Munoz scored a career-high 31 points vs. Midwestern State University (1/14/23), and then later on that season at Midwestern State, she recorded a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. In the UTPB career record books, Munoz ranks first all-time in minutes played (4,063) and is second in games played (134), second in assists (525), second in steals (273), second in free throws made (383), third in rebounds (531), third in points (1,059) and sixth in field goals made (311). She finishes her career just two steals away from passing the school record of 274 steals and just 12 assists away from overtaking the school record of 536 assists. Like Helgesen, Munoz has made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll during each of her first nine semesters at UTPB (Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Fall 2024).
The 2024-25 Academic All-District® Women's Basketball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. To be eligible for CSC Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and must be a standout in competition. Eligible nominees must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games played OR must start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games.
