Baseball shutout in series finale

CANYON, Texas (March 3, 2025) – After scoring 14 runs on 13 hits in game three of the series on Saturday, The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team returned to Wilder Park for one more game on Sunday and was held to just two hits in an 8-0 defeat at No. 23 nationally-ranked West Texas A&M University.

For UTPB (3-17 overall, 3-17 Lone Star Conference), a leadoff single by Kaleb Scull to start the game was erased by a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. It was the third time in the series Scull has opened the game with a hit, hitting a double in game one and a leadoff home run in game two.

A one-out walk by Carson Johnson in the fourth inning led to another double play by WT (13-5,11-5), this time on a lineout.

The third double play of the game turned by the Buffaloes, this one of the 6-4-3 variety, came in the sixth inning after a hit by pitch with one out by Dayton Osborn.

UTPB's only two baserunners to not be erased on a double play were a one-out hit by pitch by Taylor McDaniel in the second inning and a one-out single up the middle by Johnson in the seventh.

For WT, the contest started with a four-run bottom of the first featuring one twin (Ryan Camacho) driving in the other (Jovan Camacho) with a double down the right field line followed by a two-run home run just inside the right field foul pole by Kory Schmidt. It was the Buffs' third game this series scoring at least four runs in the opening frame after scoring five runs in each of the first two games.

A throwing error by the third baseman allowed an unearned run to score from second base in the third inning, and a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and nobody out made it 6-0 in the fifth.

After starting pitcher Damian Robles (0-2) exited after four innings pitched allowing five hits, five total runs and four earned runs, Conner Clark would get out of the fifth with a fielder's choice and a swinging strikeout, leaving two runners in scoring position, and then Jaden Loggins pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

The Buffs again loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh inning after a fielding error at shortstop to start things off, and this time they scored twice on a fielder's choice and a hit by pitch.

Max Lankford (2-0) picked up the win for the Buffs, allowing no runs on just two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in his seven innings of work.

UTPB Head Baseball Coach Justin Phillips said, "We can't give teams like that free or second chances. They made us pay for each mistake. Their two arms combined were really good on the mound today, you have to give them credit. Saturday was the best we have played as a whole, and we need to prepare this week to play an entire weekend that way."

UT Permian Basin returns home next weekend to host Eastern New Mexico University. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, March 7, from Roden Field.
