Baseball scores 16 runs to win series finale

ODESSA, Texas (February 9, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team had its best offensive performance of the first two weeks of the season, scoring 16 runs on 15 hits and defeating Texas A&M International University by a score of 16-12 in their series final on Sunday at Roden Field. The two teams combined for 28 runs and 29 hits and committed four errors apiece.

After two runs for TAMIU in the top of the first inning, the third straight game the Dustdevils scored in the opening frame, UTPB came up with a first-pitch home run to left field by Kaleb Scull in the bottom of the first. Then after an error at shortstop with two outs in the inning, an RBI-single up the middle by Taylor McDaniel scored Brent Rigtrup and an RBI-double to left center field by Makai DeSoto scored McDaniel all the way from first to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead after one inning of play.

The teams went back-and-forth on the scoreboard in innings three, four and five, but after a 1-2-3 top of the sixth inning tossed by Cole Tague (1-0), UTPB seized control of the game in the bottom half of the sixth.

Andrew Prado started the Falcons' half of the sixth with a single to center field and Scull doubled to right center field to put two runners into scoring position with no outs.

Jack Haggerty followed with an RBI-groundout to shortstop and Carson Johnson tripled home a run with another shot to right center.

In the end, UTPB scored five runs on four hits in the sixth inning and added four more runs in the seventh inning on an RBI-double by Scull, a sacrifice fly by Johnson, and a two-run home run to right center field by Rigtrup.

In all, the Falcons scored 13 runs between the third and seventh innings.

In the end, the teams combined for 10 doubles, three triples, three home runs and seven stolen bases in the contest.

Scull was 3-for-6 with two runs scored, two RBI's, two doubles and a home run; and McDaniel was 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI's and a triple.

Haggerty was 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI's and a double; and DeSoto was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a double.

Rigtrup scored four runs and led the Falcons with three runs batted in while adding two walks and a home run, and Prado was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Combined for the series, Haggerty and Rigtrup both hit 6-for-12 (.500). Haggerty added five runs scored, two doubles, three RBI's and four walks. Rigtrup added four runs, a double, a home run, a team-high seven RBI's, and three walks.

UTPB is now 2-6 both overall and in the Lone Star Conference while TAMI is 4-4 in both.

Next up, the Falcons will begin their second conference series on the road this season. The Falcons will battle Texas A&M University-Kingsville starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 14, from Nolan Ryan Field.
