ODESSA, Texas (February 3, 2025) – Senior forward
Alex Matthews of The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
Matthews averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists to fuel a 2-0 week against Western New Mexico and Sul Ross State. Matthews shot 51.7 percent from the field and was 5-for-6 from 3-point range. Against SRSU, Matthews scored a season-high 27 points. Over the two games, Matthews added five assists, three steals and a blocked shot. He also went 12-for-15 from the free throw line.

Kyle Tolin said, "Alex had a great week. He really took it up a notch last week in practice and games."
In addition to this being the fifth LSC Player of the Week award collected by UTPB men's basketball this season, Matthews is the second Falcon this season to be named the Offensive Player of the Week.
UTPB improves to 15-6 overall, is in fourth place in the Lone Star Conference at 11-4, and leads the LSC West Division at 7-2.
UTPB will now begin an important four-game road swing with a matchup at West Texas A&M University on Thursday, February 6. In their first meeting this season at UTPB (Feb. 21), the Falcons earned a 78-71 victory behind a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double by Matthews.
