SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 18, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin men's golf team opened up the Spring portion of its 2024-25 season by finishing the St. Mary's University Rattler Invitational in a tie for 11th place out of 16 total teams at the Dominion Country Club.

This was the 11th straight season the Rattler Invitational was held at The Dominion Country Club and it was the 28th season St. Mary's has hosted a tournament in San Antonio.

The field for the Rattler Invitational featured Arkansas-Monticello, Blinn, No. 40 Cameron, No. 45 DBU, Delta State, Lubbock Christian, Midland, No. 26 Midwestern State, Northwest Oklahoma State, Odessa, Texas A&M International, No. 35 UT Tyler, No. 36 West Texas A&M and Western New Mexico in addition to the Falcons and the hosts from No. 22 St. Mary's.

Round one on Monday morning was pushed back an hour due to a frost delay. The Falcons finished the opening round in 13th place.

Round two was suspended due to darkness with UTPB tied for 14th. The majority of golfers in the field finished 15 holes before sunset at the Dominion Country Club.

The Falcons returned to the course on Tuesday and ultimately finished the second round in a tie for 12th place before moving up one more spot in the final round.

UTPB was just five-over-par as a team during round three and shot 308-302-293 to finish with a three-round score of 903 (+39).

Competing for the Falcons was Ioan Rowe (80-73-69; 222; +3) in a tie for 21st, Thonsaeng Nunya (77-72-79; 228; +12) in a tie for 51st, Will Tate (77-77-76; 230; +14) in a tie for 55th, Hugo Padilla (74-88-74; 236; +20) in a tie for 74th, and Waase Iqbal (83-80-74; 237; +21) in a tie for 76th.

Rowe shot minus-three during the third round, the lowest score of the tournament for UTPB. Padilla was plus-two during the final round while Tate was plus-four.

"This week was definitely not our best performance, but we will continue to work hard and get better each day," spoke Head Coach Paul Chavez. "On a positive note, Ioan Rowe was able to finish three-under par today, and that was nice to see on a difficult golf course. We have some positive things to build off of and to try and improve on."

Rowe and Padilla led the Falcons in par-3 scoring (3.25; +3) while Tate led in par-4 scoring (4.20; +6) and Rowe again led in par-5 scoring (4.58; -5).

Rowe and Nunya tied for the team lead with 33 pars while Rowe and Tate both tied for first place in the tournament with seven birdies.

Both Rowe and Tate sank an eagle as well.

St. Mary's (290-888-277; 855; -9) shot 11-under-par during the final round and earned the team championship. This is the first time since 2020 the Rattlers have won their home tournament and the sixth time in the 28-year history.

This was the only event in February for the UTPB men's golf team before three events in March. The next event will be the Shadow Valley Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas Fort Smith on Monday, March 3, and Tuesday, March 4.
