ODESSA, Texas (February 16, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team fell in both games against Texas Woman's University on Sunday at the UTPB Softball Park. After being held to just one hit in a 3-0 defeat in game one, the Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two before ultimately falling 14-6 in eight innings.
Â
Game 1 (UTPB 0, TWU 3):
- Starting pitcher Jessica Cantrell (3-2) kept TWU off the scoreboard in the first two innings but allowed a run after a leadoff walk and a sacrifice fly in the third.
- Cantrell stranded two runners in scoring position with one out in the top of the fourth inning, pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning, but saw another leadoff walk, two errors and another sacrifice fly lead to two unearned runs in the sixth inning.
- UTPB, meanwhile, did not get a hit until a one-out single to second base by Keri Sanford in the bottom of the sixth.
- UPTB's only other baserunners came via a hit by pitch by Kaylee Moses in the first inning and an error by the first baseman on Carlee Quintero's at bat in the third inning. Quintero would steal second base before ultimately being stranded at third.
- Cantrell finished with seven innings pitched allowing four hits, three total runs, just one earned run, three walks and eight strikeouts. Just three weeks into the season, it was her third complete game as a freshman so far.
- However, for TWU, Allison Gonzalez did not walk a single Falcon and struck out nine batters in her one-hit shutout win.

Game 2 (UTPB 6, TWU 14):
- UTPB scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning as Sanford and Emery Aguilar led off with back-to-back singles, pulled off a double steal, and then both scored on an errant throw by the third baseman.
- The Falcons doubled their lead in the second inning as four straight singles started the inning, ending with an RBI-single by Sanford before a sacrifice fly by Samantha Rodriguez to make it 4-0.
- Meghan Gattis pitched a scoreless first two innings, but TWU got on the scoreboard with a solo home run to straightaway center field in the third inning and scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings.
- After a single to center field, Taylor Ramirez threw out a runner at home plate to end the fourth inning.
- A triple down the right field line by Sanford and a bunt single by Aguilar put two runners into scoring position for UTPB in the bottom of the fourth, but the Falcons were unable to do anything with it down by a run (6-5).
- With Cantrell (3-3) back in the circle, she would induce a popout on a bunt and doubled up the runner at third base to end the top of the sixth inning.
- Then in the bottom of the sixth, UTPB was able to push across the tying run as Sanford again tripled, this time to center field, and then scored on an RBI-single to right center by Aguilar.
- Cantrell followed with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, but the wheels came off in the eighth as the Pioneers started off with a single to right center and then a two-run home run to center. That was just the beginning of an eight-run, seven-hit inning that featured two two-out RBI-singles and two two-out RBI-walks.
- Both home runs in the game by TWU came courtesy of Hawwa Townsend, who finished the game 4-for-6 with five runs batted in, three runs scored, two home runs and a double from the top spot in the lineup.
- Randi Crawford (2-0) came in to pitch with one out and two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth inning and held the Falcons to just four hits and one run over the final 4.2 innings.
- Sanford would finish 4-for-4 with two triples and two runs scored while Aguilar was 3-for-5.
