Softball again falls in heartbreaker in extra innings

LAREDO, Texas (February 22, 2025) – Just six days after falling in eight innings in the final game of the opening weekend of Lone Star Conference play, The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team played on the road in LSC action for the first time this season and ended the day with another extra-innings loss. After being held to just one hit and being shutout 8-0 in five innings in game one, UTPB took a 4-0 lead in game two before ultimately falling 7-6 in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Game 1 (UTPB 0, TAMIU 8):
  • While UTPB was held to one hit, TAMIU scored its eight runs on six hits, highlighted by a seven-run, four-hit bottom of the third inning.
  • UTPB's lone hit was a bunt single by Kaylee Moses in the top of the first inning as the Falcons had the bases loaded with just one out, but were unable to push across the first run of the game as a fielder's choice back to the pitcher was followed by a groundout to third base to end the inning.
  • In its half of the first inning, TAMIU got back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases with nobody out, and a sacrifice fly to center field scored the first run of the game.
  • TAMIU's seven-run third inning started off with a solo home run.
  • Kylie Goad (2-2) earned the complete-game shutout and one-hitter for the Dustdevils. She also allowed two walks and two hit by pitches.
  • A hit by pitch by Michaella Baker to start the fourth inning resulted in a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play, and a leadoff walk by Samantha Rodriguez in the fifth saw her stranded at third base, just one base away from extending the game.

Game 2 (UTPB 6, TAMIU 7):
  • The teams combined for 27 hits, including three each by Emery Aguilar and Angelina Arriaga for UTPB.
  • The Falcons struck first with a four-run top of the third inning that started with four straight singles by Carlee Quintero, Keri Sanford, Aguilar and Rodriguez. After Agular's single scored Quintero, a sacrifice fly to right field by Baker scored Sanford.
  • Starting pitcher Jessica Cantrell held the Dustdevils scoreless in the first five innings before back-to-back singles, a hit by pitch and a walk to score a run in the bottom of the sixth. That would chase Cantrell, and then later on in the sixth, a two-out, two-run double to right field tied the score at 4-4.
  • After pitching the final 1.2 innings allowing no hits and no runs in game one, Aguilar (1-1) came in to pitch for Cantrell and went the final 4.2 innings of game two.
  • Another two-out, two-run double by the Dustdevils in the bottom of the seventh again tied the game, this time at 6-6 and sending the game into extra innings.
  • Both teams left two runners on base in the eighth inning, and then in the ninth, UTPB could not take advantage of a leadoff walk by Taylor Ramirez while TAMIU went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
  • In the top of the 10th, a one-out walk by Aguilar was followed by a popout double play to first base.
  • In the bottom of the 10th, Damaris Saldivar hit a one-out single to left center field, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then with two outs, scored on a game-winning single to right field by Kennedy Griego.

Team Records:
  • UTPB falls to 5-11 overall and 0-6 in the LSC.
  • Playing in its home opener, TAMIU reaches the 10-win mark on the season (10-7) and improves to 4-2 in the conference.
