Volleyball earns sweep at Cameron for second year in a row

LAWTON, Okla. (October 3, 2025) – Playing on the road for the first time in conference action this season, The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team swept Cameron University 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-17) for the second year in a row.

Up by just one point (11-10) in the first set, UTPB took control with an 8-2 run ending on back-to-back service aces by Makenna Grimes to make it 19-12. At the end of a set, a kill by Lauren Demuth got the Falcons to set point (24-16), and then two points later, a solo block by Demuth gave UTPB the 1-0 set lead.

Grimes led UTPB with four kills, six digs and two aces in the first set while six Falcons registered at least one kill. Cameron hit -0.023 percent (7 kills, 8 errors) in the first set.

In the second set, a kill by Grimes and another ace by Grimes was followed by a solo block by Ashlee Macias to make it 13-8 Falcons and force a Cameron timeout. It was 17-10 after a kill by Sydney Bradley, an ace by Emma Gonzalez and an Aggies' attack error. Demuth was again big late in the set, getting a kill to make it 19-13 before another kill followed by an ace to make it 21-14. Another kill by Grimes made it 23-17, and then the sixth and final kill of the set by Macias gave UTPB the 2-0 set lead.

UTPB still only had six attack errors through two sets and was hitting .263 percent for the match.

UTPB trailed 13-9 in the third set and needed four straight points on back-to-back kills by Grimes, a bad set by the Aggies and a service ace by Canyen Rodriguez to tie it. Down 15-14, a successful challenge by the Falcons started a 4-0 run that after back-to-back kills by Macias and Nickilah Whatley and a Cameron attack error, made it a 18-15 Falcons' lead and forced an Aggies' timeout.

After the timeout, Demuth put down the hammer with a kill on an overpass, and then another attack error on the Aggies and an unsuccessful challenge by Cameron on the out-of-bounds call made it a 20-15 lead.

The run continued after the video review as Kyndall Torres came out of the stoppage with a service ace to make it seven straight points for the Falcons, and then the run ended at 8-0 after a kill by Macias made the score 22-15.

UTPB got to match point after another overpass by Cameron again led to a kill by Demuth to make it 24-17, and then the final point came when the Aggies' setter was called over the middle line.

UTPB's 10 attack errors for the match were its fewest since September 26, 2024, vs. Eastern New Mexico University.

Macias and Grimes would both finish with 10 kills while Demuth had six kills and Whatley added five kills and a team-high three blocks in the match.

Whatley has had at least three blocks in all three conference matches so far this season while Demuth had two solo blocks for the second match in a row.

Grimes also led the Falcons with three service aces, was second on the team with nine digs, and was one of four Falcons with two blocks.

It was the first true road win of the season for UTPB (4-9overall, 2-1 Lone Star Conference), which has now won five straight matches against Cameron (4-11, 0-3), including the last three by scores of 3-0.

UTPB held Cameron to below .100 percent hitting for the second year in a row and allowed just one service ace after not allowing any against the Aggies last year.

It was the first home match after nine straight matches on the road for the Aggies.

"Road sweeps are never easy to come by in the Lone Star Conference, so I'm especially proud of our effort tonight to secure the three-set win," said Head Coach CJ Allard. "We had a few big leads in sets one and two that we did well to hold onto, and then the third set required a late comeback to get out with the win. A tip of the cap to our service and offensive pressure that forced Cameron into an offensive struggle as we held the Aggies under .100 for the second straight season."

The Falcons return to the court tomorrow (Oct. 4) as they travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, for the second time this season, but this time with conference stakes on the line. The action between UTPB and Oklahoma Christian University is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. as the Falcons look to improve to 3-1 in the LSC.
