Rafael Vargas of The University of Texas Permian Basin football team was named the Lone Star Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
Vargas averaged 44 yards on punts, made a 31-yard field goal and handled kickoff duties to fuel a 27-3 road win over Midwestern State. Vargas pinned one of his punts inside the 20-yard line. His field goal was the only score in the fourth quarter and he added an extra point in the third quarter. Of his five kickoffs, two were touchbacks. Vargas is tied for the longest punt in the LSC this season at 73 yards and he is averaging 42.6 yards per boom.
Vargas becomes the fifth UTPB player to earn a weekly player of the week award in the first five games of the season, and is the third to do so on special teams.
This weekend, UTPB will play at home for the fourth time in its first six games of the season as the Falcons take on Angelo State University starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 5.
