Dionissiou leads Falcons past Eagles for the first time in 10 years

EDMOND, Okla. (September 28, 2024) – Freshman Sophie Dionissiou scored the first two goals of her career and added an assist, all in the second half, as she led The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team to a 3-0 road win at Oklahoma Christian University on Saturday night. The Falcons effectively spoiled OC's home opener and earned their first win over the Eagles in 10 years.

It was the end of the opening weekend of Lone Star Conference action as UTPB improved to 3-1-2 overall and picked up its first conference win of the season at 1-0-1. Oklahoma Christian, meanwhile, suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 4-1-1 and 0-1-1 after tying 3-3 on the road against Lone Star Conference preseason favorite and No. 10 nationally-ranked Dallas Baptist University on Wednesday.

Last season, the Falcons earned their first positive result against the Eagles since September 21, 2014, and the first in LSC play with a 2-2 tie, but this year, it was all UTPB as the Falcons earned their first road win at OC since 2012.

UTPB outshot OC 6-1 in the first half, with three shots coming off the foot of Andrea Garcia, and had six corner kicks, but could not make much of its chances.

In the 18th minute, UTPB had a shot by Dionissiou that was blocked but led to a corner kick, and then in the 19th minute back-to-back shots by Garcia were both blocked as well.

The first shot on goal of the match came from Ilaya Pata in the 43rd minute.

Each of the first three shots of the second half came by the Eagles, but after the only save of the match by Valeria Delgado in the 58th minute, Dionissiou found the back of the net with a left-footed shot in the 59th minute.

Almost exactly 10 minutes later, Dionissiou found Lara Brewis to make it 2-0 in the 69th minute, and then Dionissiou would score again in the 78th minute.

UTPB doubled up OC in shots 12-6 and allowed just one shot on goal all match long.

UTPB Head Coach Carla Tejas spoke on the historic victory, saying "Absolutely amazing effort from the girls. We have been working so hard day in and day out. Today is just a reflection of every single effort these women put in. They want to make history and today they did it. We haven't won against OC in 10 years and this is the first time in program history since we joined the Lone Star Conference. All the credit goes to this amazing group of women."

Now, UTPB will try and keep its momentum going next Saturday, October 5, as the Falcons host No. 10 Dallas Baptist University at 11 a.m. at the UTPB Soccer Field.
