ODESSA, Texas (October 5, 2024) – Outside of a two-minute span late in the first half, The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer held its own against No. 11 nationally-ranked Dallas Baptist University on Saturday at the UTPB Soccer Field. The first goal for DBU came just over 13 minutes into the match, and then two goals in the 42nd and 43rd minutes made it 3-0 to round out the scoring.
DBU (5-0-2 overall, 2-1-1 Lone Star Conference) handed UTPB (3-2-2, 1-1-1) its first conference loss of the season and outshot the Falcons but just one, 5-4, in the first half.
The second half was a 4-1 shot advantage for UTPB, but unfortunately only one of the Falcons' eight shots on the day went on target, resulting in the lone save of the match.
UTPB fired the first two shots of the match as
Lara Brewis missed wide right less than a minute and a half in and
Vasoula Flaouna missed high two minutes in.
DBU got on the board 11 minutes later after a precise cross by Angelina Olmos led to a nice shot fake and goal by Taylor Tufts, last year's Lone Star Conference Player of the Year.
Tufts would then get the assist on the second Patriots' goal, a beautiful header by Parker Coe that would leave the Falcons shell-shocked and ultimately led to another goal just a minute and a half later by Emily Bates.
"We got distracted for two minutes and DBU was effective and put it in the back of the net," spoke Head Coach
Carla Tejas. "I'm proud of this group of women as we outshot the No. 11 team in the nation, and I hope we see them again later on in the season."
In the second half for UTPB,
Sophie Dionissiou's shot in the 51st minute was saved,
Cassandra Ramirez's shot in the 54th minute was high, Brewis' shot in the 66th minute was wide left, and the final attempt of the match by
Kristel Chaves in the 84th minute missed high.
UTPB remains at home to start next week as the Falcons host Lubbock Christian University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9. It will be UTPB's third time playing at home in its first four conference matches of the season.
