9/23/2024 4:15:00 PM

ODESSA, Texas (September 23, 2024) – Senior middle hitter Chyra Thompson of The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team was named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Thompson averaged 3.83 kills and 1.17 blocks in a pair of 3-0 wins vs. Texas A&M International and Lubbock Christian to extend UT Permian Basin's win streak to seven matches. Thompson posted a .583 attack percentage powering 23 kills, with 12 kills against TAMIU. The senior's .786 attack and 11 kills vs. LCU led the Falcons to a single match hitting percentage record (.392). Thompson added seven blocks and averaged 4.50 points over the two LSC Challenge matches.

UTPB Head Coach CJ Allard said, "The hardest challenge presented to the team with our new offense this year is certainly felt in the middle position. They have to lead our defensive unit at the net while working themselves into our offense in every transition phase. Chyra has embraced that challenge and is finding herself having a career season. Along with her mentality, we had superb ball control last week and the setters committed to running our system."

Thompson becomes the second Falcon in program history to be named a Player of the Week in the Lone Star Conference. She joins Aquincia Strambler, who was also named the Offensive Player of the Week on November 16, 2021.

This week, the Falcons will host their Lone Star Conference opener on Thursday, September 26, against Eastern New Mexico University at 6 p.m. inside the Falcon Dome before also hosting No. 3 nationally-ranked West Texas A&M University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 28.
