LUBBOCK, Texas - They're not done yet. A brilliant pitching performance by the University of Texas Permian Basin kept their run in the Lone Star Conference Championships alive as they eliminated No. 18 and defending national champion Angelo State 3-0 on Friday at Hays Field in Lubbock, Texas. The Falcons will play the loser between Lubbock Christian and Arkansas-Fort Smith tonight at 7 p.m. for a spot in the finals.
Â
Trevor Barth was once again brilliant, throwing 7.0 shutout innings and allowing just five hits.
Ethan Flodstrom,
Clayton Coats, and
Payton Matthews all had two hits each.Â
Â
The Rams threatened in the top of the first after getting a runner to third, but Barth escaped the inning by getting a popup. In their half of the inning, the Falcons loaded the bases but a flyout ended the threat and kept the game scoreless.Â
Â
Coats tripled to rightfield lead off the second. Matthews followed with a single through the right side and put the Falcons ahead 1-0. Barth settled in until facing trouble in the fifth. A pair of walks and a wild pitch put runners on second and third but Barth got a strikeout to end the inning.
Â
Flodstrom got things going in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out single, then moved to second on a single by
Austin Hall.
Gibrian Pena singled home Flodstrom for an insurance run and put runners on the corners with still only one out.
Brent Rigtrup's sac fly to deep center make it 3-0 Falcons and that was plenty of cushion.
Â
Bryan Adams worked around a two-out double in the eighth before turning the ball over to
Jalen Johnston in the ninth. Johnston ran into trouble but got a strikeout with runners on the corners to end the ballgame.
Â
The Falcons look to advance to the finals with a win over the loser between Lubbock Christian and Arkansas-Fort Smith. That elimination game will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at Hays Field.
