It has been a memorable year for UT Permian Basin men's golfer Sangha Park, who has had historic success on the golf course. He's currently ranked the No. 1 golfer in all of Division II and recently was crowned the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Player of the Year.
"It feels great and I'm grateful to be named the LSC player of the year and 1st team all-conference," said Park. "I just want to thank the school staff, my coaches, and my teammates."
While Park has had his best season on the course this year, he didn't think he would be the LSC Player of the Year when the season started.
"I didn't think about any results in the beginning and I'm still trying not to think about the future," said Park. "I am very focused on the present and believe in the work that I'm putting in."
Park explained that after the 2022-2023 regional championship, he really reflected and had conversations with his coaches on what he needed to do to improve his game.
"I think the reason why I'm having a successful year is because of last year's regional championship. Right after the tournament ended, I had a conversation with my coaches about my mind on the golf course during the tournament," said Park. "We figured out a better way to think which helped a lot going into this year, and the amount of practice with my mentor KJ Choi last summer helped me improve too. I am much more mature as a golfer and a person this year."
Recently, Park and the UT Permian Basin men's golf team competed at the LSC Championships at the WinStarGolf Club in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Overall, the team improved by one place compared to last season's results, finishing tied for fifth – which led to them missing out on advancing to stroke play by 10 shots.
The Falcons will now wait to see if their name will be called tomorrow (Apr. 26), when the Division II Men's Golf Committee announces who will be selected for the championship.
