UTPB Splits With Sharks

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Freshman Delaney Doelitsch, sophomore Keri Sanford and sophomore Kelsey Valo had three hits each as The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team (3-6) split with Hawaii Pacific (2-4), Thursday at Howard A. Okita Field.  The Falcons lost the first game 6-5 in nine innings and won the night cap 4-1.

Game - 1

In the fifth inning, UTPB loaded the bases with one out on a single from senior Julia Bumford, a walk to freshman Kylie Parker and a single by Sanford.

Valo singled to center field to score Bumford and Parker.  Sanford and Valo each moved a base on the throw home.

Sophomore Gabrielle Cabrera doubled down the left field line to clear the bases.  She moved to third on a hit from Doelitsch and scored on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the six, Hawaii Pacific scored four runs.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Sharks took advantage of an error to score and forced the game into extra innings.

In the eighth and ninth innings, the Falcons had two runners on base but left them stranded.  HPU scored in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

For UT Permian Basin, Doelitsch had three hits.  Senior Destini Trahan (0-2) gave up 10 hits, four runs, walked three and struck out five in eight innings.

For Hawaii Pacific, Jewell Larson had three hits.  Gianna Kerschbaum (1-0) gave up five hits and walked three in three innings.

Game - 2

In the second inning, senior Melayna Lopez doubled and moved to third when the fielder misplayed her ball.  A sacrifice fly from sophomore Angelina Arriaga scored Lopez.

Hawaii Pacific scored in the bottom of the third to tie it up.  In the fourth inning, senior Mia Quintero singled and moved to second when the shortstop bobbled the ball hit by senior Julia Bumford.

Quintero scored on a single from Arriaga.  In the fifth inning, the Falcons used three hits to score two runs.  In the top of the sixth inning, the game was called due to darkness giving UT Permian Basin the win.

For UT Permian Basin, Valo had two hits.  Freshman Morgan McGaugh (3-1) gave up six hits, one run which was unearned, walked three and struck out one in five innings.

For Hawaii Pacific, Kerschbaum (1-1) gave up six hits, four runs with two earned and struck out two in four innings.

UT Permian Basin opens the Lone Star Conference season, Tuesday Feb. 20 playing Angelo State.  The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
