Black History Month: Meet Kamari Portalis

2/1/2024 3:00:00 PM

As we kick off the celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, we would like you to meet Kamari Portalis

Portalis is a women's basketball player and a junior studying chemistry.

The month of February is a special month for Portalis, not only because it is Black History Month, but also because it is the month she was born.

"Black history month isn't just my birthday month, but it also an intricate part of life where I get to celebrate others who are just like me and people who fought for my rights as a black woman. Even though we have 29 days to celebrate our Blackness, every day is celebration for Black excellence for me. I love being Black. In spite of all the trials and tribulations it just shows how resilient we are as a people."

Growing up Portalis celebrated her Black identity by wearing her natural hair with pride, always supporting Black owned businesses and learning how to make traditional recipes passed down from my elders, which she enjoys doing.

"I just simply enjoy every ounce of being Black! The joy I feel when I think of our strengths is a reminder of what makes my identity unique."

An influential quote that has spoken to her is one by the infamous Maya Angelou. "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style".

During her time at UTPB, the thing that she loves the most is her basketball family, friendships she has made, and the people who have supported her.
