ODESSA, Texas (October 23, 2024) – A pair of penalty kick goals by both The University of Texas Permian Basin and Angelo State University in the final six minutes of the first half resulted in a 1-1 tie between the teams in Lone Star Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night at the UTPB Soccer Field. It was the second year in a row UTPB and ASU ended in a 1-1 draw and was the third positive result against the Rambelles in all three years Head Coach
Carla Tejas has been at the helm of the Falcons.
In a matchup against a team receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, UTPB got on the board first with a penalty kick goal by
Laura Perez in the 40th minute.
Perez used a stutter-step and scored to the right side of the keeper, netting the first goal allowed by Angelo State in its last five matches.
It was the team-leading fourth goal of the season for Perez, but ASU's Anna James answered with another penalty kick score, her second goal of the season, in the 44th minute.
The second half of action was kept mostly in ASU's offensive side of the field as the Rambelles outshot the Falcons 7-1 in the final period.
Shots at the end of the match were 14-6 overall and 6-4 in shots on goal in favor of the visiting team, and corner kicks were an 8-1 advantage for the Belles. The Rambelles defense had previously allowed just three shots to each opponent in their last four matchups this season.
For UTPB,
Valeria Delgado matched her season-high with five saves, her second match in the past week reaching that mark, while Amber Lockwood made three stops for ASU.
Perez was matched by defender
Kristel Chaves with two shots on goal for the Falcons offensively.
The Rambelles would fire off three shots in the first ten minutes missing just high on all of them.
Chaves challenged Lockwood to make back-to-back saves in the 32nd minute as Chaves' first shot rebounded right back to her.
The first real chance for ASU came in the 37th minute as Christiana Clark's shot was saved by a diving Delgado to keep the match scoreless for the time being.
Delgado later made four of her five saves in the second half before Lockwood made the final save of the night on a shot by Perez in the 83rd minute.
In the 86th minute, ASU's Kailee Meyer got open on the left side of the goal and Sanai Stewart sent a ball over the top of the Falcons' defense that would fall right in front of Meyer. Meyer would go on and get past Delgado, but sent the ball inches right of the goal post.
"It was an amazing match today," spoke Coach Tejas. "Angelo is a very good team, and they brought their best performance. The women on my team gave their all. Now we have to recover because we play five matches in the next two weeks."
UTPB's record moves to 4-5-3 overall and 2-4-2 in the LSC with the decision while Angelo State moves to 8-1-4 overall and remains undefeated in conference play at 6-0-2. Heading into a matchup against No. 10-ranked Dallas Baptist University this weekend, the Belles successfully continued their 11-match unbeaten streak.
Next up, UTPB will close out the week at Texas Woman's University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, in Denton, Texas.
