DENTON, Texas (October 26, 2024) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team was unable to capitalize on its momentum from its last match against nationally-recognized and first-place Angelo State University and instead fell 1-0 for the second season in a row against Texas Woman's University, this time on the road during the Pioneers' Senior Day.
UTPB falls to 4-6-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the Lone Star Conference while Texas Woman's improves to 8-3-3 and 4-2-3.
This is the third straight year that the final score between the Falcons and Pioneers was 1-0 after UTPB won 1-0 on the road in Coach
Carla Tejas' first season leading the team in 2022.
TWU began the day on Saturday seventh in the LSC standings while UTPB was 12th.
It was the sixth shutout in the last seven matches for TWU.
Sophie Walker,
Sophie Dionissiou and
Hannah Davies each fired two shots in the first half while
Valeria Delgado made two of her three saves in the opening period.
UTPB held a 6-5 advantage in shots in the first half, but the second half saw the Pioneers limit the Falcons to just one shot and no corner kicks.
The lone goal of the match came on the second-career goal by TWU sophomore forward Dani Pruitt assisted on a cross by Celeste Beltran in the 69th minute. It was only the second shot of the second half by either team after Beltran hit the crossbar on a deep shot earlier in the period (61st minute).
Davies hit the crossbar as well for UTPB in the first half (30th minute).
UTPB's lone shot of the second half came high from
Cassandra Ramirez in the 82nd minute.
Next week will see the Falcons play on Tuesday and Friday instead of Wednesday and Saturday. The first match will come on the road at Midwestern State University at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, before the Falcons host St. Edward's University at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 1.
