Women’s soccer suffers conference loss at West Texas

CANYON, Texas (October 16, 2024) – After earning an historic 5-1 win at home against the Lady Buffs last season, the first win in program history against West Texas A&M University and the largest margin of the victory for the Falcons in a Lone Star Conference match, the Falcons were unsuccessful this time around and fell 1-0 at West Texas A&M on Wednesday night.

Before UT Permian Basin's (3-5-2 overall, 1-4-1 Lone Star Conference) 5-1 victory last season, WT (6-5-0, 3-3-0) had posted 12 consecutive shutouts against the Falcons while scoring 39 goals. The Lady Buffs now hold an 11-0 record at home in the series and a 10-1 record in conference play against the Falcons.

UTPB outshot WT 7-5 in the first half, but the second half saw six of the first seven shots of the period go to the Lady Buffs, who took advantage of a mistake on a failed clear by the Falcon defense and got on the board in the 57th minute on a shot off a rebound by Madison Stokes.

The goal was assisted by Avery Putnam, who had the LSC's first at trick of the season last time out in the Lady Buffs' 4-0 win over Sul Ross State University.

Cassandra Ramirez was off target in the opening minute of the match and again in the fifth minute.

The first save of the match by WT's Reagan Heelan come after another shot by Ramirez in the 32nd minute.

Ramirez's was off target in the 38th minute, and then her fifth shot of the first half was saved by Heelan in the final 30 seconds of the opening period.

Ramirez then had the first shot for either team in the second half, missing in the 51st minute.

Heelan made two more saves on shots by Kristel Chaves in the 79th minute and Hayley Sawyer in the 83rd minute.

UTPB had a great chance to score in the final four minutes as Sawyer found Ramirez open on a breakaway in the middle of the field, but the one-one-one opportunity was saved by a diving Heelan to deny the chance.

Head Coach Carla Tejas said, "Today is a match we didn't deserve to lose. The group gave 110 percent, but that's football, it is not about fairness, it is about who put the ball in the back of the net. We have a great culture and a great program, and sometimes things take time to come together. This team is patient and won't give up. I am proud of every single player today."

Ramirez finished with seven total shot attempts and three shots on goal.

Valeria Delgado made three saves in the first half and two in the second half for the Falcons, matching Heelan with five.

The Falcons return home on Saturday, October 19, to take on Sul Ross State University at 11 a.m.
