TYLER, Texas (October 12, 2024) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team fell 4-0 on the road at The University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday afternoon.
UTPB (3-4-2 overall, 1-3-1 Lone Star Conference) was outshot 9-0 in the first half before notching seven shot attempts in the second half, including three from
Cassandra Ramirez.
UT Tyler (8-1-2, 3-1-2), meanwhile, led 2-0 at halftime after Natalie Jones scored off a loose ball after a corner kick in the 20th minute and Ella Anderson added an incredible score in the final 40 seconds of the period as she corralled the throw in, dribbled toward the middle of the field and fired a right-footed shot from just inside the midfield line that bent in over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper.
Anderson would add her second goal of the match on a breakaway to cap the scoring in the 65th minute as Jones added an assist to her day as well. Jones, who is tied for second in the LSC with 17 points on the year, has scored six goals and totaled five assists on the season, and has registered a point in all but two matches.
Paula Camus entered the match halfway through the first half and made three saves for a UTPB team that has now given up six goals in its last two matches.
Tyler's backup keeper, Robbi Curry, came in in the second half and made five saves. She stopped back-to-back shots by Ramirez and
Vasoula Flaouna in the 57th minute, again stopped back-to-back shots by Ramirez and
Hayley Sawyer starting in the 70th minute, and made her final save on another shot by Ramirez in the 83rd minute.
Head Coach
Carla Tejas spoke, "We played against a very strong team, in my opinion the best in the conference. We have to regroup and see where we are failing and act on that. This loss is on me as the head of the program, so I need to do better. There's still 26 points left in conference play and nothing is lost. We will come back stronger out of this bad streak; I have no doubt in my team."
The victory gives UT Tyler its eighth win of the season, the highest single-season win total in the Division II era for the program. Coming into the match, UT Tyler ranked sixth in Division II women's soccer in goals per game (3.00) and had notched the sixth-highest point total (75) in the nation.
In addition, UT Tyler has now outscored their opposition by a 31-to-3 margin on the year.
Next up for the Falcons is another road contest at West Texas A&M University. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16.
