Falcons Out Sprint Greyhounds

ODESSA, Texas – It was a total team performance as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (5-1) beat Eastern New Mexico (2-4), 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19), Friday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.  This was day two of the Dr Steve Aicinena "Iceman" Invitational.

In the first set, UTPB was firing on all cylinders jumping to an 6-1 lead.  Eastern New Mexico stormed back with a 7-2 run to tie the set at 8-8.

The Greyhound took the lead at 18-15.  Senior Cassandra Rother found the back corner to start a 7-2 burst to take the set.

In the second set, the Falcons were on cruise control early with a 14-9 lead.  ENMU came back with an 11-6 run, tying the set at 20-20.  UT Permian Basin forced an error, then senior Devin Alcoser served up four straight point to finish it out.

The third set went back-and-forth almost the entire way.  Down 21-20, junior Aaliyah Gray fired the ball down the middle to tie it at 21-21.  Eastern New Mexico scored four straight points to stay alive.

The fourth set followed the format of the previous set.  It was back-and-forth action until it was 18-16, UTPB.  Kills from senior Logan Terrazas and Gray finally gave the Falcons control.

For UT Permian Basin, Gray had 12 kills and 13 digs, junior Reann Cato had three aces and 16 digs and junior April Egwu had seven block assists.

For Eastern New Mexico, Gracelyn Stubbs had 15 kills and 13 digs while Getsemani Carrasco collected 23 digs.

UT Permian Basin takes on St. Mary's (Texas) and Sul Ross State, Saturday, Sept. 9.  The matches are scheduled to start at 1:00 and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
