Falcons Corral The Steers

MIDLAND, Texas – The sky wasn't falling but the records were as The University of Texas Permian Basin football team (1-0) beat Texas College (0-1) 96-0, Saturday night at Astound Broadband Stadium. The Falcons ended up breaking seven school records.

UTPB started the game with the ball and made a methodical drive down the field.  Kenny Hrncir, a graduate student, fired an 18-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Ben Patterson.  That made it 7-0, Falcons with 8:56 to go.

At the 5:57 mark, sophomore Calvin Littles scored on a 37-yard bomb from Hrncir to make it 14-0, UT Permian Basin.  On the last play of the first quarter, junior Laquan Wells rambled 44 yards off a pass from Hrncir.  UTPB scored five times in the second quarter to seal the deal.

Offensively, the 96 points was a school record and is the most points by a Lone Star Conference team since Sept. 4, 2014 when Texas A&M Commerce set the league record with 98 vs. East Texas Baptist.

The Falcons were balanced with 259 yards on the ground and 313 in the air.  The 572 yards in total offense is third best in school history.  Hrncir had a powerful debut for UTPB as he was 19-of-24 for 287 yards and six touchdowns and added 40 yards rushing.

Wells had five catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns while senior Jeremiah Cooley was very efficient with three catches for 57 yards and two scores.  Sophomore Kory Harris ran for 85 yards and a score, averaging nearly 10 yards a carry.  Junior Rafael Vargas set a school record hitting 12 extra points.

Defensively, UT Permian Basin ended up with five school records.  They held Texas College to -36 yards rushing, 38 yards passing and two yards in total offense, all UTPB school lows.  The Falcons' other two records came with eight quarterback sacks and 119 yards on interception returns.

Freshman Jamarion Ravenell and Dequan Street, a graduate student, both returned picks for touchdowns.  Ravenell took his 87 yards, the second longest interception return in program history

UT Permian Basin hits the road, Saturday, Sept. 8, taking on Western Colorado.  The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. MT
