Falcons Have Strong First Day In Michigan

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Consistency was the name of the game as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's golf team opened the season at the Folds of Honor Challenge, Sunday.  The tournament is being played at The Meadows, a Par-71 with a total yardage of 7048 yards.

Grand Valley State shot 287-282 to finish one over par.  The Lakers lead by five strokes over Wayne State.  Rounding out the top five are Aurora (3rd – 293-288 - +13), Indian Hills CC (4th – 301-281- +14) and Illinois Wesleyan (5th – 297-288 - +17).  The Falcons shot 293-293 and are in sixth place at +18.

Individually, Drew Coble of Grand Valley State (70-67) is at five under and leads by three strokes over Jose Ramirez of Indian Hills CC (74-66).

Senior Sangha Park is chasing the individual leader.  He shot 71-70 for a two-round score of 141 (-1) and is just four shots behind Coble.  Park finished with six birdies, and he had an eagle on the Par-5 9th hole.  That is one of only two eagles in the tournament.

Junior Will Tate is having a strong debut for UTPB as he is tied for 20th at +4 (71-75).  He has hit par 23 times and is among the top 20 in the tournament for Par-5 scoring at 4.67 strokes (-2).

Sophomore Kongpop Kaikaew is tied for 23rd at +5 (76-71).  He has scored seven birdies and is among the top 10 in Par-5 scoring at 4.50 (-3).

Senior Nolan Otto and freshman Ioan Rowe are tied for 45th.  They both are +10 with identical rounds (75-77).  Rowe is one of only nine players who are shooting even or better on Par-3 holes.

Sophomore Thonsaeng Nunya is 78th at +20 (83-79).  He has recorded six birdies, which is among the top 20 for the tournament.

UT Permian Basin remains in Allendale, Monday, Sept. 11 to close out the tournament.
