ODESSA, TX - The UT Permian Basin baseball team ended the regular season with a bang at Roden Field. The Falcons, who had already scored 60 runs in three games in their series with Oklahoma Christian, continued to pound Eagle pitching in a 15-3 win in their final home game of the year. The sweep was the first over a Division II opponent in a four-game series since 2016.
The Falcons finished the first season of the
Gabe Grinder era with 23 wins, their most in a season since winning 30 in 2015. The win capped off the first four-game sweep of a Lone Star Conference opponent and was just the team's second conference sweep since joining the league in 2017. With a 13-12 record, the Falcons finished the year with a winning record at Roden Field for the first time since 2015 and their 21 LSC victories was the most conference wins in program's Division II history.
The Falcons got on the board first with
Austin Hall's inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the opening frame. After the Eagles got one back, the Falcons scored two more in the bottom of the second on a pair of RBI singles by
Michael Clapperton and
Ethan Flodstrom.
Jay DeSoto plated a run in the fourth to push the lead to 5-1. An error allowed two runs to score and the Falcons wouldn't stop there. Later in the inning, Flodstrom tripled to left to score a pair before scoring on a single by
Jack Haggerty to make it a 10-1 ballgame.
Flodstrom drove in his fourth run of the game in the fifth before the Falcons added four in the sixth. Rigtrup singled in the first before three bases loaded hit batters scored three more. The Eagles scored a pair in the seventh but the Falcon lead was too much to overcome in the run-rule victory.
Grant Harvill shut down the Eagles for his third win of the year. The freshman struck out six over 6.1 innings before
Austin Raleigh and
Andrew Troppmann got the final two outs.
