Falcons Score 23 Runs in Wild Series Opener

ODESSA, TX – There was no shortage of offense in the final series opener of the regular season for the UT Permian Basin baseball team against Oklahoma Christian at Roden Field on Friday.  Needing a win to keep their Lone Star Conference playoff hopes alive, the Falcons scored 23 runs on 21 hits for a 23-13 win over the Eagles.

The Falcons recorded their 20th win of the season, reaching that plateau for the first time since 2020.  The team has also won 10 games at home and on the road for the first time since 2015.

All but one Falcon batter had a multi-hit game while every player crossed the plate at least twice.  Austin Hall and Brent Rigtrup each drove in five runs while Ethan Flodstrom was a home run shy of the cycle.  Rigtrup hit his second and third home runs of the season in the win.

The Falcons scored a run in the bottom of the first on a single to center field by Hall but then the bats went quiet.  The Eagles plated five in the fourth inning to take the lead, but the Falcons answered back in a big way in the fifth.

Brandon Glowacki started the inning by getting hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Michael Clapperton.  Two batters later, Mason Hamlin's single scored a run to trim the deficit to three.  Following a walk to Carson Johnson, up stepped Hall after a pitching change.  Hall welcomed the reliever rudely with a grand slam and put the Falcons on top 6-5.  Rigtrup followed with another home run and the Falcons were on top by two.

The Falcons hit around in the inning after a walk and a single to bring Glowacki back to the plate.  He singled to center for the seventh run of the inning.  Clapperton followed with a sacrifice fly to score Jay DeSoto and Ethan Flodstrom tripled in another run for the 10-5 Falcon lead.

The floodgates opened when the Eagles responded with eight runs and took a 13-10 lead.  Johnson singled and Hall was hit by a pitch to start the bottom half of the inning.  Cooper Ciesielski tied the score with a three-run home run to retie the score at 13.

Flodstrom reached on an error in the seventh, and Hamlin followed with a single to open the inning.  Johnson put the Falcons back on top with an RBI-single and a 14-13 lead.  Rigtrup doubled to center, scoring two, and put the Falcons up by three.

The Falcons put the exclamation point on the afternoon with a seven-run rally in the eighth.  Clapperton doubled to open the inning and was followed by a Flodstrom double and a single from Hamlin for the 18-13 lead.  Later in the inning, Hamlin scored after Johnson's steal of second drew the throw.  Two batters later, Rigtrup launched his second long ball of the afternoon putting the team ahead 21-13.  The Falcons would eventually load the bases, but Clapperton ended things with a two-run single, sending them home with a run-rule victory.

These teams are back at it tomorrow at noon in the first game of a doubleheader from Roden Field.
