SILVER CITY, NM –
Aracely Araiza continued to add to her UT Permian Basin softball team lead in RBI on Wednesday with her third multi-RBI game in the last four games. The senior's sixth inning grand slam gave her 29 for the season and her fourth homer of the year.
The Falcons threatened in the third on back-to-back singles by
Aubree Beggs and
Keri Sanford. Later in the inning
Cheyenne Marquez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. They couldn't capitalize on the opportunity as Western New Mexico escaped the jam without giving up a run.
Trailing 3-0,
Emily Andress led off the sixth with a single and Marquez followed with one of her own. Two batters later
Taylen Thurman was plunked to load the bases for Araiza. The senior hit a grand slam to give the Falcons the lead which they held onto into the bottom of the seventh. However, a pair of hits by the Mustangs plated two runs for the 5-4 final in walk-off fashion.
Sanford led the team with three singles on the afternoon.
Abby Cousins struck out a pair in 6.0 innings of work in the circle.
The Falcons are back in the Basin this weekend as they'll host St. Edward's. The first of the three-game series begins at noon on Friday with game two to follow.
