Box Score 2 CANYON, TX – The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team was able to grab a doubleheader split thanks to six batters collecting at least two hits each in an 11-5 win in Game 2 over West Texas A&M University after having dropped the day's opener 10-9 in extra innings.
UTPB got three-hit performances in Game 2 from
Carson Johnson,
Brent Rigtrup and
Christian Rodriguez while
Michael Clapperton,
Cooper Ciesielski and
Austin Hall each collected two hits as the Falcons amassed 16 on the game.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard early and often by tacking on three runs in each of the first two innings with Rigtrup driving in one in each of the two innings on a single and a walk, respectively, along with Ciesielski's two RBI double down the left field line in the first and
Jack Haggerty's single through the right side to score two in the second.
The resilient Falcons responded in the top of the sixth when Johnson hit a sac fly to right allowing Rodriguez to score and Haggerty collecting a single to left two batters later to tie the game when Clapperton crossed the plate.
A bases loaded, two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning would eventually win Game 1 for West Texas A&M 10-9.
Game 2 reverted down to a seven-inning contest as UTPB would score at least one run in each inning except the first en route to the 11-5 victory.
Hall and Rodriguez collected back-to-back RBI singles to get the scoring started in the second inning while Rigtrup would be involved in both runs scoring in the third when he collected a RBI single to score Johnson before scoring on a
Stephen MacKenzie sacrifice bunt.
The big play during the five-run stretch was Johnson sending a blast down the right field line good enough for a triple and to drive in Clapperton, who had earlier collected an RBI single himself.
A steal of home by Gallegos in the sixth coupled with Rigtrup's RBI double to right center to score Johnson in the seventh would give the Falcons the comfortable victory.
Andrew Troppmann tossed the fifth and sixth innings in relief and gave up just one run on one hit with a walk while striking out two to improve his record on the bump to 3-2 on the season.
Both teams will close out the four-game series with a single game on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
