Falcons Shut Down MSU to Take Weekend Series

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Another day and another six-run inning coupled with a masterful job in the circle from Destini Trahan keyed the UT Permian Basin softball team to a 7-1 series finale victory on the road at Midwestern State on Sunday afternoon.

Midwestern State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Falcons soared out to a 6-1 lead in the top of the fourth with all six runs coming with two outs in the inning.

Angelina Arriaga's triple to right field brought in Aryell Aguiar for UTPB's first run of the game.

A fielding error by MSU's second baseman off the bat of Aubree Beggs extended the inning and allowed in what would prove to be the game-winning run when Arriaga scored from third base.

Aracely Araiza sent a shot through the left side of the infield to bring in Beggs from third.

Keri Sanford brought in two runs and Sanfod would close out the scoring in the fourth inning when she crossed the plate safely by way of a Julia Bumford single to right field.

Sanford's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth would give the Falcons a 7-1 lead that they would not relinquish thanks to an outstanding pitching performance from Trahan, who improved to 3-9 on the season.

Trahan saw just 26 batters step to the plate, which is five more than the minimum for a seven-inning contest, and hauled in four strikeouts while only giving up one walk.

Trahan was so dominant after giving up MSU's lone run she recorded 10 consecutive outs from the second inning all the way though to one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Araiza and Andress each led the Falcons with three hits while Andress scored two runs.

UTPB will return to action when the Falcons welcome in the Texas Woman's University for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, March 17. First pitch for Friday's first game is slated for 2 pm.
