Jay DeSoto had a solid afternoon for UT Permian Basin Baseball, recording three hits and scoring a run to lead the offense. DeSoto wasn't the only Falcon with multiple hits on the day as
Stephen MacKenzie,
Mason Hamlin, and
Carson Johnson all had a pair of hits against St. Mary's.
DeSoto opened the day with a double down the left field line on the second pitch of the day.
Michael Clapperton moved him to third on a bunt and reached himself after the Rattler throw to third was late. After a Clapperton steal of second base, MacKenzie singled through the left side to drive in a run.
Ethan Flodstrom's ground ball then brough home Clapperton for the 2-0 lead. Game one starter
Eddie Cheong ran into trouble in the second, allowing two runners to reach base. The senior dug deep and struck out the final two batters to strand the pair and keep the Rattlers off the board. Falcon pitching couldn't keep the Rattlers off the board long, as the home side plated four in the third and fourth innings for the eventual 8-2 final.
In game two the Falcons had a chance to tie a 1-0 game in their half of the third.
Jack Haggerty ripped a double to the right centerfield gap, but a perfect relay just beat DeSoto at the plate to end the inning. The threatened again in the fourth after a single by Hamlin and back-to-back hit batters. They couldn't push a run across despite loading the bases and were held scoreless in an eventual 8-0 final.
Ivan Castro didn't allow a run in 1.2 innings of relief in the first game. Out of the bullpen
Creede Jeffers struck out the side in his lone inning of action. As a team the Falcons ripped five doubles on the day.
These two wrap-up their series tomorrow at 1 PM in San Antonio. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
