Late Goal Leads Falcons to Upset of No. 24 Angelo State

UT Permian Basin had never beaten a nationally-ranked opponent and had lost 13-straight to Angelo State.  That all ended Wednesday when the Falcons knocked off No. 24 ASU 2-1, on an own goal in the 86th minute of action.  It was the first Falcon win over the Rambelles since 2010 and the first season since 2015 the team has reached three wins.

The Falcons controlled the pace early on but it was the Belles that scored first in the 11th minute.  The Falcons never blinked, taking aim at the net but unable to convert.  That changed in the 18th minute when Cassandra Ramirez ripped a kick from over 30 yards home to tie the game.  Despite both sides best efforts they went into the locker room tied at one.

In the 63rd minute the Belles looked to take the lead, but Jenna McEnaney made a kick save in a one-on-one situation to keep the score tied.  In the 86th minute the Falcons drew a foul for a free kick in the offensive zone.  Martina Terra-Garcia served the ball deep into the box which deflected off a Belle defender and into the back of the net.  From there they played keep away for the final four minutes to seal the biggest win in program history.

Coming into the game the Belles hadn't allowed a goal in five games and allowed just four goals all season.  McEnaney made four saves in the winning effort.

The Falcons hit the road Saturday to face Texas Woman's at 1 PM.  Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
