Offensive Eruption Leads Men's Soccer to First Victory of the Season

The University of Texas Permian Basin men's soccer team rolled to a 5-1 victory over Adams State Saturday afternoon at home. The win for the Falcons marked their first triumph of the 2022 campaign and served as the initial victory for first-year head coach coach Victor Domingues.

Emiliano Cardona opened scoring in the 13th minute. The junior midfielder and Sacramento State transfer found the net on an assist from Jorge Monferrer to put the Falcons on top. A goal later in the half from Gustavo Barroso helped UTPB build a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Domingues' squad kept their foot on the pedal in the second half. Alberto Romano scored an unassisted goal in the 61st minute to make it a 3-0 ballgame, and a 67th minute shot from Leonardo Bonelli got past the goalie to create a four-goal lead. Almost immediately after Adams State scored in the 82nd minute, Jakob Beschel sprinted down the field and converted a shot-on-goal. As the final horn sounded, the Falcons were able to celebrate a 5-1 victory over the visiting Grizzlies.

Barroso had one goal and one assist on six shots and three shots-on-goal. Sergio Gonzales and Monferrer accounted for the only other assists in the triumph, while Beschel, Bonelli, Cardona, and Romano found the net.

Senior Kristian Hovind got the start between the bars and allowed just one goal on ten shots faced. The Raelingen, Norway, native finished with five saves in the contest.

Following Saturday's win, UT Permian Basin (1-0-1) will prepare to hit the road next week for an exhibition at Wayland Baptist. Wednesday's match in Plainview will start at 7 p.m. The Falcons will return home on Sept. 14 to host Texas A&M International. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
