Offense Tops Ten Again as Bats Surge over Lions

ODESSA, TX - UT Permian Basin Baseball's offense pushed across double-digit runs in a game for the sixth time this season in the second of two against Arkansas Fort Smith on Saturday. Two big innings got the job done for the Falcons, who tallied five runs in the opening frame and seven scores in the fifth to collect a 14-9 victory.

Everything was working for the Falcons to open game two. Michael Clapperton and Garret Thornton led the game off with back-to-back singles and Oswaldo Godina earned a free pass to load the bases. Devin Ferrari and Pedro Astacio each earned an RBI via the hit-by-pitch, bringing two Falcon runs across. With one down, Marcus Johnson drove in two more with a one-out base hit through the right side. Astacio scored the fifth run of the stanza on a groundout to second.

While the Falcons added a run in both the second and third innings, the real damage came in the fifth. Cole Dickie set the tone with a leadoff triple, which Astacio followed up with a base knock to score him. One out later, Gabriel Melendez singled to score another. Clapperton then walked to load the bases, and Thornton smacked a double to right-center to clear them. Godina doubled in the next at-bat to bring Thornton home, and he scored later in the frame on a sac fly to bring the Falcons to 14 on the night.

The first game of the twin bill did not go as well for the hosts. Arkansas Fort Smith tallied two four-run frames in the second and the fifth to secure an 8-5 win.

Facing a four-run deficit in the second, the Falcons pulled the margin back to just one in the bottom of the fourth. Trailing 4-1, Melendez doubled to score Johnson and Clapperton drove in Mario Pena with a sacrifice fly to trim the lead.

Thornton had a monster day in the doubleheader, batting a combined 4-for-8 while scoring twice and driving in three. Ferrari, Astacio, Johnson and Melendez also drove in multiple runs in the twin bill.
