Coming off a dramatic comeback win in yesterday's series opener, UT Permian Basin once again put up a crooked number for the thrilling walk-off win over St. Mary's. Two seventh-inning home runs propelled UT Permian Basin to an 8-7 walk-off win over St. Mary's in Game 1.
Devin Ferrari crushed a two-run blast to tie it up and, two batters later,
Mario Pena walked it off with a solo shot to left field.
All the Falcons needed to earn that thrilling victory over the Rattlers was two high-scoring innings. The three-run seventh came after a five-run second inning that included two singles, two doubles, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice fly.
Game 1's early-inning fireworks helped UTPB out to a 5-0 lead before St. Mary's battled back, claiming their first advantage in the top of the sixth. Fortunately, the late homers from Ferrari and Pena helped the Falcons earn their second straight Lone Star Conference win.
Ferrari (2-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R), Pena (2-4, HR, 2 R, RBI), and
Michael Clapperton (2-3, RBI) had multi-hit performances in the walk-off triumph.
Gabriel Morin (1-4, 2B, R) and Gabe Melendez (1-2, RBI, R) also hit safely in the first game of the doubleheader.
Jake Rohde had a solid outing in relief in Game 1. The senior out of Richmond, Tex., pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit and striking out one Rattler.
Ferrari stayed hot in Game 2 in which the Falcons staged another dramatic comeback. The Lamar CC transfer singled to center field in the first inning, driving home Clapperton and putting UTPB on top 1-0. A second run came in for the Falcons in the bottom of the fourth when a throwing error allowed
Christian Rodriguez to touch home plate. St. Mary's offense broke out to take an 11-2 lead heading into the seventh.
Pedro Astacio's single, followed by walks to
Cole Dickie and Pena loaded the bases to start the inning. Rodriguez ripped a double down the line for the first two runs of the inning. Clapperton follow with an RBI-single.
Garret Thornton then ripped a double to left for another run and cut the deficit to 11-6.
Oswaldo Godina plated two with an opposite field single to put the tying run on deck. Ferrari then crushed an 0-2 pitch for his second homer of the afternoon and make it 11-10. That's as close as the Falcons could get in the 11-10 final.
Cade Pollard had a solid start in the second game of the doubleheader. The pitcher from New Braunfels, Tex., gave up just one earned run in 4 2/3 innings with one strikeout.
