Starting pitching shined for UT Permian Basin in Friday's doubleheader versus St. Mary's. Falcon aces
Becky Berth and
Destini Trahan had great outings against the Rattlers, a squad that boasts one of the best offenses in the Lone Star Conference.
Berth, a senior from Oconto, Wis., helped UT Permian Basin out to a solid start in the first matchup. She allowed just two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings while giving up five hits and three walks. Berth recorded six strikeouts in her 19
th appearance of the season.
Unfortunately, the Falcon offense managed just one run in the contest, which came in the fifth inning via an RBI single from
Ashlynn Bradley that drove in
Aracely Araiza.
Emily Andress recorded a double, her fourth of 2022, and
Melayna Lopez reached on a base hit, but it did not lead to any run support. The Rattler offense caught fire late in the matchup and pulled away for a 10-1 victory.
Destini Trahan mowed down the St. Mary's offense in Game 2 of the conference doubleheader. The Weatherford College transfer had one of her best starts of the season against the Rattlers, as she tossed seven scoreless innings to begin her outing. She ran into some trouble in extra innings, however, and finished allowing four earned runs on six hits and three walks. Trahan tallied one strikeout on the day.
The nightcap went into extra innings with no score. The Rattlers quickly loaded the bases and plated four runs in the top of the eighth. The Falcon offense could not match it in the home-half of the inning and fell 4-0.
Sydney Bishop and
Melayna Lopez had one hit each against St. Mary's in Game 2.
UT Permian Basin returns to action on Sunday in Odessa. The Falcons will host St. Edwards for a Lone Star Conference doubleheader. Games will begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
