For the second time in three days, junior right-hander
Destini Trahan tossed seven scoreless innings. The Nederland, Tex., native surrendered just five hits while striking out two in a complete-game shutout win. Trahan denied a potent St. Edward's offense even a single run by completing the seven-inning contest in just 85 pitches.
In the second matchup of the doubleheader, the game was halted in the bottom of the fifth due to a brief weather delay. Immediately after play resumed, pinch runner
Cheyenne Marquez moved from second third on a
Valerie Gonzalez single and then scored on a defensive error to make it 1-0. Thanks to Trahan's excellence in the circle, that was all the offense the Falcons needed to pick up their first win since March 6.
Valerie Gonzalez was one of two UTPB hitters to have a multi-hit game in the series with St. Edward's. After going hitless in the first contest, Gonzalez went 2-for-3 in the Game 2 win over the Hilltoppers and became the eighth player in program history with 100 career hits. The do-it-all outfielder out of El Paso singled to left-center in the first before her fifth-inning infield hit moved Marquez up 60 feet.
Ashlynn Bradley (1-3) and
Sydney Bishop (1-1) were the only other Falcons to tally a base-hit in the finale.
Bradley led the UT Permian Basin offense with a two-hit performance in an 8-1 loss in Sunday's opener. The senior utility player from Aztec, N.M., singled in the bottom of the second inning, moving
Aryell Aguiar into scoring position against a stout Hilltopper defense. The Falcons failed to bring in a run, however, until the fifth frame when Bradley doubled down the right field line to lead off the half-inning. She would come around and touch home plate thanks to an
Aracely Araiza double later in the fifth. St. Edward's offensive attack was too much for UTPB, though, as the Hilltoppers scored runs in each of the first six innings and held on for a seven-run victory.
Aryell Aguiar went 2-for-3 and
Aracely Araiza finished 1-for-3 with a double and one RBI in the Game 1 defeat.
UT Permian Basin hits the road next weekend for a pair of conference tests. After traveling to Oklahoma Christian for a pair of games on Friday, the Falcons head to Lawton, Okla., for two matchups with Cameron on Sunday. UTPB returns home on Apr. 22, as they will play host to West Texas A&M in another Lone Star Conference doubleheader. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
