Parker Buys was dealing on Sunday, going 5.1 innings and striking out four to earn his first win at UT Permian Basin. The sophomore allowed just four hits as the Falcons took the opening game of the doubleheader 5-2 over Cameron.
The Falcon offense came to life in the second inning after a walk and a fielding error by the pitcher put a pair on. After a double steal,
Marcus Johnson singled to left to bring home
J Raul Lopez and
Devin Ferrari for the early lead. With runners on second and third and nobody out in the third, the Falcons scored twice more on a defensive miscue by the Aggies. A wild pitch allowed
Michael Clapperton to score and a throwing error as the catcher tried to catch went by the pitcher covering home, allowing Gabe Morin to score from second for the 4-0 lead. The Aggies scored a pair and had runners on the corners with one out in the sixth when
Caleb Vuono relieved Buys. On his first pitch he got a line drive to
Oswaldo Godina at first who then beat the runner trying to get back for the inning ending double play.
Pedro Astacio homered to lead off the sixth for the Falcons for a huge insurance run before Vuono worked around a single for the save and the Falcon win.
In the second game of the day the Aggies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Falcons battled back starting in the third.
Cole Dickie and Johnson walked to open the inning and the Falcons loaded the bases on a single by
Garret Thornton. Godina doubled to left center to plate a pair and get the Falcons back in the game. After the Aggies extended the lead to 5-3, the Falcons had a chance in the sixth. Four walks brought in a run, three of them coming with two outs, to cut the deficit to two. That was as close as they'd get as the Aggies added to their lead in the seventh in what would eventually be a 9-4 final score.
