Box Score From his very first at bat of the season on Tuesday,
Jay DeSoto was locked in blasting a pair of home runs and driving in five against the University of the Southwest. He finished the day 5-for-6 with a two-run home run in the first and a three-run blast in the third to blow the game open.
Making his college debut,
Gabriel Morin had himself a game. He recorded his first career hit, an RBI-single in the Falcons four-run first before cranking a two-run homer in the fourth before finishing the day 3-for-4.
J. Raul Lopez got plunked to start the afternoon before moving to third on a
Devin Ferrari double. After a balk scored a run, DeSoto blasted one to left to extend the lead. A walk to
Marcus Johnson and a single by
Pedro Astacio put runners on the corners with just one out. Morin drove home Johnson with a clean single to left to make it 4-0.
Morin got things going in the third with his second hit of the day with one out. An error allowed
Christian Rodriguez to reach safely, and
Michael Clapperton followed with a single to load the bases. Ferrari roped his second double of the day to bring in a pair to set up DeSoto's second homer of the afternoon.
Astacio got things going in the fourth with a one-out single to left. Morin followed with his home run to left center to extend the lead to 10-0. Rodriguez and Clapperton kept the line moving with back-to-back singles and turned it over to the top of the order. Ferrari hammered a single to center to plate Rodriguez and expand the lead with two outs. DeSoto then just missed his third homer of the day with a long fly out to the warning track in left field.
The Mustangs scored a run in the fifth to break the shutout. In the top of the seventh the Falcons added to the lead. DeSoto roped his fourth hit of the afternoon to open the frame.
Oswaldo Godina followed with a walk before
Hayden Matthewson was plunked to load the bases. Logan Brett was walked to bring in a run before
Mario Pena was hit to score another. The offense continued to pour it on as
Daniel Enriquez brought in a pair on a single to left to extend the lead.
DeSoto opened the eighth with a leadoff double for his final act of the day. Pinch-runner
Bernie Valdez came into score on a wild pitch and Matthewson scored on a throwing error to complete the scoring in the 18-1 final.
Nine Falcons combined to allow just one run and struck out 10.
Austin Parks struck out two in 1.2 innings while
Arnaldo Garcia Torres and
Clay Thompson combined to strike out four in the final two innings.
