Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Tom Perpetua

Contreras Nets First of the Year in Battle with WT

It took some second half heroics, but UT Permian Basin came away with a point against West Texas A&M Wednesday nigh in Odessa.  Augustin Contreras found the back of the net in the second half for the only goal of the night for the Falcons, but the defense held serve for a 1-1 draw with the Buffs.

The Buffs struck first with a goal in the 19th minute.  The Falcons kept applying pressure and getting the ball at the net but Alberto Romano and Gabriel Navarez were both stopped twice in the opening half.

The offense continued to attack the net and Matias Pereira nearly tied the game in the 60th minute but was stopped by a diving goalkeeper.  In the 66th minute the Falcons earned a corner kick.  Gustavo Barosso crossed it into the box where Contreras slammed it home with a header to tie the game.  Both sides had chances late to break the 1-1 tie, but neither keeper gave an inch down the stretch.

The Falcons out shot the regionally ranked Buffs 12-8, with seven Falcon shots landing on goal.  Kristian Hovind was terrific in net with three saves on the night.  Barroso earned his league leading sixth assist of the year.

With three games to go the Falcons are in control of their playoff destiny.  They travel to Oklahoma Christian this Saturday and can essentially clinch a postseason spot with a win heading into the final week of action.  Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
