Falcons Slow Down No. 20 Kingsville in Defensive Slugfest

Coming into Saturday night, No. 20 Texas A&M – Kingsville was 16th in the nation in rushing, averaging 225 yards on the ground per game, and was one of the most potent offenses in Division II.  UT Permian Basin Football gave them all they could handle on their Homecoming night, holding them to just 104 yards.  In the effort MJ Link became the program's all-time leader in receiving yards and tied for the most catches in program history.

The Falcons muffed a punt to give the Javelinas good field position to set up the first score of the ball game.  Despite the short field the Falcons held the home team to just three points.  The Javelinas found their first sustained drive late in the first quarter, but Donta Stuart saw the end to it with an interception inside the red zone and returned it out near midfield to flip field position.

Neither side gained an edge until the Javelinas pinned the Falcons on their own three.  A pass interference followed by a 42-yard reception by MJ Link flipped the script and got the Falcons on the other side of the field.  Facing a fourth down inside the 10, the Falcons gambled and picked it up on a three-yard run by Caden Cox.  On the next play, the Falcons faked a screen and Gunnar Abseck slipped into the back of the end zone where Dylan Graham found him to take the 7-3 lead.

The Javelinas had a chance to score again before the half, but Donta Stuart got a hand on the 42-yard field goal attempt to send it into the locker room 7-3.

After a stop to start the second half, Carson Roberts booted a chip shot 22-yard field goal to push the lead to 10-3.  Neither offense could find a rhythm until the start of the fourth quarter when the Javelinas connected on a 40-yard field goal, making it 10-6.  With 1:26, the Javelinas found the end zone on a 19-yard pass to take the 13-10 lead.  A comeback wasn't in the cards though, as the Falcons were stopped on fourth down with a chance to drive down the field to tie or take the lead.

Cox had 51 yards on the ground to lead the team.  Link finished the night with five catches for 71 yards.  Derrian Forge and Hayden Kelly led the way with 11 tackles each.  Robinson had three sacks along with nine tackles.
