Becky Berth had by far her best start of the season Sunday, tossing a complete game, and allowing just one unearned run to defeat St. Edward's 3-1. Berth needed just 76 pitches in her second win of the year.
Sierra Camacho was also brilliant in the circle, allowing just two runs while going the distance in the opening game. In the third inning of the first game,
April Arellano became the seventh player in UT Permian Basin Softball history to record 100 career hits.
Arellano got the Falcons on the board in the third with a bases loaded single to bring in
Sydney Bishop. The game became a pitcher's duel from there as neither offense could break through. The Hilltoppers threatened in the fifth but Camacho got a fly ball to right to end the threat. In the sixth, the Hilltoppers manufactured a run which would be the difference for the 2-1 final.
Both pitchers faced the minimum in game two until the third inning. Three straight singles by
Nayeli Diaz,
Valerie Gonzalez, and Alice Marion loaded the bases with one out.
Abby Hernandez brought in a run as she reached on an error to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons added to the lead in the fourth thanks to another defensive miscue by the Hilltoppers allowed
Aracely Araiza to score.
Araiza added an insurance run in the sixth on a single up the middle to score Arellano for the 3-0 lead. The Hilltoppers got on the board in the bottom half of the inning on an error but that's as close as they would get as Berth shut the door for the win.
Arellano led the offense on the day with three hits and an RBI. Araiza and Marion had two hits each with Araiza driving in a run.
The Falcons return to Odessa for their final homestand of the season. The Falcons will open the weekend with No. 13 Oklahoma Christian coming to town on Friday. Download the UTPB Athletics App to stay up to date with your favorite Falcon teams all season long.
