Alicia Marion had a career afternoon with six hits between both games of UT Permian Basin Softball's Sunday doubleheader. Marion started the day going 4-for-6 as the Falcons went to extra innings and followed it with a pair of hits including a double in game two. The Falcon offense combined for 23 hits on the afternoon.
Mia Quintero also had a big afternoon with four hits, including a three-hit performance in game one.
Game one against Texas Woman's was a back-and-forth affair. The Pioneers scored four runs early before the Falcon offense came to life in the fifth.
Ashlynn Bradley got the Falcons on the board with a two-run single to right. Another run came into score on error to cut the deficit to one.
Aracely Araiza ripped a pinch-hit double to bring home Bradley and tie the score.
Leslie Martinez put a stamp on the rally with a two-run single.
The offense continued in the sixth. Three straight singles to open the frame loaded the bases. They got a run in on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Kortlyn Brown. The Falcons got two more on an error allowing
Emily Andress and
April Arellano to score to expand the lead. The lead wouldn't hold, as the Pioneers rallied in the seventh to force extra innings. Neither offense got much going in the extra frames until the Pioneers scored in the bottom of the 11
th for the 10-9 final.
The Falcons bounced back immediately in the second game, scoring a pair on the top of the first. Singles by
Abby Hernandez and Araiza put two on for Bradley who drove them in with a two-run single. The Falcons added on in the third thanks to a Pioneer error. Two runs scored on an error off the bat of Bradley, before she came around later in the inning on a wild pitch. Arellano brought home an insurance run in the fifth on a ground ball as the Falcons held on for the 6-3 win, their first Lone Star Conference win of the season.
Becky Berth faced 45 batters and threw 10 innings in the first game. She struck out a career-high 10 batters while only walking one. Falcon pitching in game two was brilliant as
Abrie Castillo allowed three runs in 4.1 innings for her second win of the year.
Abby Cousins shut the door striking out two over 2.2 innings.
