Kortlyn Brown continued her sensational start to her collegiate career Friday night as UT Permian Basin Softball opened Lone Star Conference play at Midwestern State. The freshman had three extra base hits, including the second home run of her career, and raised her season batting average to .464. She has a hit in eight of nine games this season including five multi-hit games. The Mansfield native is now tied for fourth in the LSC with five doubles on the year.
In the circle,
Abrie Castillo continued her brilliance. The junior allowed just two earned runs over five innings and still hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a game this season. Castillo now has 22 strike outs on the year against only three walks in a team-high 26.1 innings.
Brown provided the offense in game one of the day. She homered to right-center to put the Falcons on the board in the fourth. The Falcons inched closed when
Emily Andress scored on an error in the fifth but that's as close as the Falcons got in the 3-2 final.
Becky Berth was terrific allowing just two earned over six innings. The start marked her third straight in which she lowered her season ERA.
The Falcons got off to a quick start in game two. Brown scored on an error off the bat of
Ashlynn Bradley to take the early lead.
April Arellano added an RBI-single in the third expanding the lead. In the fourth the offense broke out scoring four times. Bradley drove in
Mia Quintero with a double. After loading the bases,
Alicia Marion singled her in for the 4-0 lead. Arellano brought in another run after being hit by a pitch and
Rylie Reed worked an RBI-walk to extend the lead. The lead didn't last as the Mustangs rallied in the seventh for the walk-off 7-6.
Six Falcons had hits in game two while Brown and
Valerie Gonzalez had multiple hits on the evening. Arellano led the offense with a pair of RBI between the two games.
The Falcons travel to Denton to finish their first weekend of LSC play against Texas Woman's with a doubleheader starting at noon. Download the UTPB Athletics App today to follow the team all season long.
