Becky Berth continued her strong play in the circle, lowering her season ERA for the seventh straight game. On Sunday she struck out six over seven innings of work and allowed only three earned runs against No. 3 Texas A&M – Commerce. In her last start, Berth allowed just three runs over seven innings against No. 8 UT Tyler.
UT Permian Basin had their chances early in the first game. A single by Alice Marion, double by
April Arellano, and walk to
Aracely Araiza loaded the bases but the offense couldn't push a run across. The Falcons had a pair in scoring position again in the fourth, but a force out at home ended the threat. In the sixth, the Falcons once again had a pair on, but were unable to push a run across. The Lions scored three in the first before Berth settled down. She cruised until the fifth where an error extended the inning and allowed three unearned runs to score for the 6-0 final.
The Falcons were in trouble early in game two, with the Lions loading the bases against starter
Abby Cousins. She settled down, striking out the side, including the final two with the bases juiced to escape harm. The Falcons offense was kept off the bases much of game two by Lion starter Alyssa LaBlanc who came into the game tops in the NCAA with nine wins.
Leslie Martinez led the Falcons with a pair of hits. Marion, Arellano,
Kortlyn Brown,
Marissa Salinas,
Aracely Araiza, and
Mia Quintero all scattered hits across both games.
The Falcons don't have far to travel next weekend. First, they'll stop at Angelo State for a doubleheader Friday, before taking on Lubbock Christian in doubleheader action Sunday. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow your favorite Falcon teams all season long.
